Bargfrede fans 12, Lynx lose to Mason City
MASON CITY — Leading up to their Class 4A-Region 5 quarterfinal matchup against Mason City, the Webster City softball team was riding on a proverbial high. The Lynx had won five straight games, won seven of their final eight games of the regular season and saw junior pitcher Delainey Bargfrede capture her 500th career strikeout in the regular season finale against Southeast Valley.
Even with all of that momentum, and Bargfrede delivering a performance of 12 strikeouts and two base hits, the Lynx encountered a problem that had hampered them throughout the 2023 campaign. That problem was converting hits into runs.
Despite Bargfrede’s best efforts, the Lynx couldn’t bring runners home before falling to the Riverhawks in a 3-0 decision held last Thursday at the Mason City Softball Complex.
The Lynx were held in check by Mason City hurler Adyson Evans, who struck out seven Webster City batters and allowed five hits in a complete game.
Webster City finished the season with a 17-16 overall record.
Mason City improved to 15-15, advancing to the Class 4A-Region 5 semifinals, where they will face off against Gilbert. The Riverhawks and Tigers (16-13) took to the diamond this past Saturday on the campus of Gilbert High School.
While the Lynx threatened with five hits and three stolen bases, Evans and the Riverhawks maintained their shutout.
Also recording hits against Mason City were senior Livia Kasch, sophomore Breanna Bahrenfuss and teammate Cloe Savitski. Savitski, junior Ellie Weinschenk and sophomore Lydia VanDeer chalked stolen bases in the regional quarterfinal.
With the end of the season, the Lynx will bid farewell to Kasch, Trinity Griffith and Chloe Andersen.
