Going into their clash on Tuesday evening at Lynx Field, the Webster City baseball team and nonconference opponent Saydel were going in two different directions.
Due to one of the toughest opening slates in Iowa high school baseball, the Lynx were three-games below .500 and had lost their previous two games. The Eagles had been trending upward, riding on a five-game winning streak after enduring through a four game skid.
Webster City bucked the trend, and proved why they’re always a tough out — no matter the size or talent of their opponent.
The Lynx got back on track on Tuesday, using their sticks to soundly defeat Saydel via a 13-3 final score at Lynx Field in Webster City.
Trailing 3-0 midway through the opening inning, the Lynx scored 13 unanswered runs — plating four in the first, scoring seven in the fourth and tacking on insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Junior Josh Stansfield acquired three RBIs on three hits, while freshman Gavin Griffith tossed a gem by fanning eight Eagle batters and allowing just three hits in 90 pitches.
Webster City improved to 7-9 overall, while Saydel dipped down to a 7-5 record.
This past Wednesday, the Lynx ventured north to take on North Central Conference foe Clear Lake, which took place at Lions Field in Clear Lake. At 7:30 p.m. today, Webster City will welcome in Iowa Falls-Alden for an NCC bout at Lynx Field in Webster City.
Recaps from both league matchups will be reported in an upcoming edition of the Daily Freeman-Journal.
Junior Briar Klaver and senior Connor Hanson also had strong performances against Saydel, as Klaver racked up two RBIs and two base hits while Hanson hauled in two RBIs and one single. Senior CJ Hisler tapped the dish on three occasions to aid the purple and gold, along with whipping up a double and a single.
Junior Keegan Hisler turned in a solid outing with two hits and one RBI, while freshman Matthew Tesdahl contributed with two hits while scoring twice for the winning cause.
Senior Ty McKinney also recorded a base hit, while junior Trevyn Lyons scored for the Lynx. Freshman Aiden Hrnicek put his speed to good use, as well, with one stolen base and two runs.
