For the four past seasons, the Webster City baseball team has reigned supreme in the North Central Conference. However, in a very familiar quote to any sort of leader, “heavy is the head that wears the crown.”

In a matchup to determine who will lead the NCC thus far into the season, the Lynx were dealt with a tough 13-3 setback at the hands of Humboldt, which took place on Monday at Lynx Field in Webster City.

Despite the Lynx taking an early one-run lead, Humboldt dished up eight runs in the top of the third inning, before snapping the Lynx’s five-game winning streak over the Wildcats.

Due to their second straight loss, the Lynx dropped down to 6-9 overall with a 3-1 record within the NCC. Humboldt extended its winning streak to four games, improved to 8-2 overall and took the top spot in the conference with a 3-1 mark.

This past Tuesday afternoon, Webster City had a shot at redemption, playing host to Saydel for a nonleague matchup at Lynx Field in Webster City. At 7:30 p.m. today, the Lynx will square off against another NCC foe in Clear Lake, slated to be played at Lions Field in Clear Lake.

Results from both contests will be reported in an upcoming edition of the Daily Freeman-Journal.

The Lynx held a 1-0 lead until the top of the third inning, when Humboldt drove in eight runs to capture an 8-1 advantage. The Wildcats added an insurance run in the top of the fourth, before Webster City responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Heading into the final pair of frames, the Lynx trailed, 9-3. The Wildcats then put the game on ice by plating four more runs and shutting down any sort of rally from the Lynx.

Junior Briar Klaver picked up two RBI, while teammate Keegan Hisler, senior CJ Hisler, senior Connor Hanson, freshman Matthew Tesdahl and junior Trevyn Lyons each collected one base hit against Humboldt.

Keegan Hisler also stole one base, scored a run and fanned two Humboldt batters in 64 pitches. Freshman Jaxon Griffith struck out three Wildcats in more than three innings.

Ty McKinney scored two runs for the Lynx.

Starting at $3.46/week.
