Before Thursday’s road matchup against Pocahontas Area, the Webster City baseball team was three games away from breaking even and placed into the middle of the pack within the North Central Conference standings.
Two games later, the Lynx are now closing in on the .500 mark and the top of the league’s pecking order. Simply put, Webster City is picking up some momentum.
The purple and gold had to dig deep with a 7-5 victory over the Indians in a nonconference contest held last Thursday at the PAC Athletic Complex in Pocahontas, before notching a decisive 13-3 victory over Iowa Falls-Alden in five innings in an NCC contest held this past Friday at Lynx Field in Webster City.
Tied at 5-5 head into the sixth inning, the Lynx plated two and held for a two-run triumph, before junior Trevyn Lyons went off on the Cadets by going 3-of-3 with three RBIs and a stolen base.
Thanks to these two wins, Webster City improved to 9-10 overall with a 4-2 record in the NCC. PAC lost to Newell-Fonda this past Friday at home, dropping the Indians down to 3-9, while the Cadets dropped to 3-8 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
At 7:30 p.m. today, the Lynx will take on Hampton-Dumont-CAL for a conference tilt at the HDC Baseball Field in Hampton. The Bulldogs come into the game with a 3-2 league record and 6-9 overall.
Against PAC, the Lynx faced an early one-run deficit in the top of the third inning. Webster City countered with five runs to convert the score into a 5-1 lead.
The Indians replied with four runs over the next three innings, tying the game up at five runs apiece. In the top of the sixth, the visiting Lynx recorded two more runs, which were good enough to return Webster City to the win column.
Junior Josh Stansfield paced the Lynx with two RBIs, a single and a double, alongside freshman Jaxon Griffith’s two RBIs, one base hit and a stolen base. Senior CJ Hisler collected a double, single and an RBI, while junior Briar Klaver whipped up two hits and an RBI.
Junior Josh Griep recorded a hit, while Lyons claimed a victory on the mound after striking out four PAC batters.
The Lynx carried that momentum into Friday’s game against the Cadets, building up a 4-0 lead into the top of the third. Within that frame, Iowa Falls-Alden plated three runs, before Webster City countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, before hauling in six more runs to end the game in five.
Following Lyons’ performance was junior Keegan Hisler’s triple, RBI and two stolen bases. Keegan Hisler also struck out four Cadets in three innings to pick up a victory on the mound.
Senior Ty McKinney contributed with a double and an RBI. Stansfield had a base hit and an RBI, while Griffith earned two stolen bases, two strikeouts and one RBI.
Senior Connor Hanson and freshman Matthew Tesdahl also logged one RBI each against the Cadets.
