CLARION — With each win, the Webster City baseball team is climbing closer to the .500 mark. It’s also helping that the Lynx are inching closer to Humboldt, who is currently leading the North Central Conference.

The purple and gold continued to keep pace for the second place slot within the NCC, defeating Clarion-Goldfield-Dows via a 13-1 final score in six innings in a conference contest held on Wednesday at the CGD Baseball/Softball Complex.

Webster City had no shortage of hits against the Cowboys, paced by the combined efforts of senior Connor Hanson, teammate Ty McKinney and junior Keegan Hisler. Hanson tallied a triple and a single with two RBIs, followed by a double, a single and two RBIs each from McKinney and Hisler.

Freshman Gavin Griffith was solid on the mound, as well, fanning six CGD batters and allowing just three hits in a complete game. Teammate Jaxon Griffith also recorded three stolen bases against the Cowboys.

Thanks to their latest win, the Lynx improved to 12-13 overall with a 7-3 record within the NCC. CGD dropped to 3-8 in league play and 8-16 overall.

The Lynx will be in for a highly anticipated rematch this evening, as they will face Humboldt at 7:30 p.m. on the campus of Humboldt High School. The Wildcats (18-3, 10-0 NCC) defeated Clear Lake via an 8-2 decision on Wednesday at the Lions Field athletic complex in Clear lake.

A recap from the league matchup between Webster City and the Wildcats will be reported in an upcoming edition of the Daily Freeman-Journal.

Webster City got going early, building up a 8-0 lead by plating two runs in the top of the first, and scoring three runs each in the top of the second and third frames. In the top of the fourth, the Lynx pushed that lead to 9-0.

While CGD scored one run in the bottom of the fourth, the Lynx sealed the game with four runs in the top of the sixth.

Jaxon Griffith also tallied two base hits and an RBI, while junior Briar Klaver contributed with a double, single and two RBIs. Senior CJ Hisler chipped in with a double, as junior Josh Stansfield picked up two base hits.

McKinney, Klaver and Hanson also logged one stolen base respectively in the victory.
