Gaining momentum

CLEAR LAKE — Since the start of the month of June, the Webster City softball team has picked up some steam. Since dropping a close 3-1 conference matchup against No. 6 (Class 1A) St. Edmond, the Lynx have won three of their last four games going into the middle of week.

Webster City made it four of their last five contests, using an early lead and a late push to tame Clear Lake with a 9-6 final score in a North Central Conference matchup this past Wednesday at Lions Field Athletic Complex.

The Lynx built up a three-run lead midway through the game, before needing plating two runs in the top of the fifth and scoring three more runs in the top of the seventh to fend off a late rally from the Lions.

It was a trio of juniors that came up clutch for the Lynx, as Addy Tesdahl smacked a triple and stole two bases, while Ava Peterson recorded two RBIs and two base hits and hurler Delainey Bargfrede struck out nine to claim another win from inside of the circle — along with hauling in a double and an RBI.

Senior Livia Kasch also struck a double and an RBI to help lift the Lynx to their third straight victory.

“We did a great job at the plate and on the bases,” said Brad VanDeer, WCHS softball coach. “We put together several scoring innings by taking advantage of some of Clear Lake’s mistakes, and came up with some clutch hits, as well.”

The Lynx improved to 5-8 overall with a 3-2 mark within the NCC, while Clear Lake dipped down to 2-3 within league play and 4-6 overall.

This past Thursday, Webster City welcomed in Iowa Falls-Alden for a conference game at Lynx Field. At 6:30 p.m. today at Lynx Field, the Lynx will be in for a test against No. 5-ranked (Class 4A) Carlisle.

Saturday will see a full slate of games at the home athletic complex, as the purple and gold will host their annual Lynx Classic. Webster City will face West Marshall at 9 a.m., and will take on Pella Christian at 11 a.m.

A full recap from the full slate of conference and nonconference games will be posted in an upcoming edition of the Daily Freeman-Journal.

Contributing to the victory was sophomore Breanna Bahrenfuss, junior Bonnie Nohrenberg, senior Trinity Griffith and teammate Chloe Andersen.

Bahrenfuss tallied two hits and one RBI, as Nohrenberg chipped in with one hit and one stolen base. Griffith reeled in a single and an RBI, and Andersen picked up a single and a stolen base.

Sophomore pinch runner Lydia VanDeer also scored twice for the winning cause.

Starting at $3.46/week.
