When the dust settled at the conclusion of the Lynx Classic, held this past Saturday at Lynx Field in Webster City, the Webster City softball team had played six contests in seven days.
Par for the course when it comes to Iowa high school softball.
To close the week, however, the Lynx won two of four contests — dominating Iowa Falls-Alden with a 12-2 final score in a North Central Conference matchup held last Thursday, before coming up short in a 6-3 battle against No. 5-ranked (Class 4A) Carlisle last Friday.
At the Lynx Classic, Webster City split its Saturday slate, falling to West Marshall in a 4-2 struggle before surging past Pella Christian with a 6-4 victory.
Heading into a new week of play, the purple and gold moved to a 7-10 record and 4-2 record within the NCC.
At 6 p.m. on Monday, the Lynx will dip back into NCC play, squaring off against Hampton-Dumont-CAL on the campus of Hampton-Dumont-CAL High School in Hampton.
Trailing the Cadets 1-0 heading into the bottom of the second, the Lynx bats came to life before outsourcing Iowa Falls-Alden 12-1 to close the game in five innings.
“It was a really great effort all around,” said Brad VanDeer, WCHS softball coach. “I thought we played well, defensively. We had a couple of mistakes, but did a good job responding and not letting (Iowa Falls-Alden) gain any momentum. We also hit and ran the bases very well.”
Junior Bonnie Nohrenberg smacked two singles for two RBIs, while stealing one base for the winning cause. Teammate Addy Tesdahl was solid, as well, picking up two RBIs, two stolen bases and a base hit.
Within the circle, junior Delainey Bargfrede notched seven strikeouts while allowing just three hits.
Senior Trinity Griffith came out with two hits and a stolen bag, complemented by teammate Livia Kasch’s effort of a double, an RBI and one stolen base. Sophomore Breanna Bahrenfuss also had two hits, alongside senior Chloe Andersen’s single, RBI and stolen base and freshman Jakela Cherry’s single.
Freshman Alivia Burns and sophomore Lydia VanDeer each tallied two stolen bases against the Cadets.
Stats from Friday’s game against the seventh-ranked Wildcats, and both games from Saturday’s Lynx Classic were unavailable as of press time.
