Webster City edged by top-ranked Dowling
WEST DES MOINES — Since the beginning of the season, the Webster City baseball team has faced several highly rated opponents. Four of them, to be exact, with their latest challenge being top-ranked (Class 4A) Dowling Catholic.
Squaring off against the Maroons in hostile territory, the Lynx nearly pulled off a huge win, before yielding a 3-2 result on Tuesday night on the campus of Dowling Catholic High School.
Trailing 3-0 heading into the top of the seventh, senior CJ Hisler plated teammate Ty McKinney before junior Trevyn Lyons pushed teammate Keegan Hisler across home. However, the Maroons were able to escape with the final out, extending Webster City’s skid to three games.
Due to their setback, the Lynx dropped down to 2-5 overall. Dowling Catholic picked up their sixth win in seven games, improving to 6-1.
Webster City brought in another tough opponent this past Wednesday, welcoming Newell-Fonda to Lynx Field in Webster City. The Lynx will then finish the week at Algona on Friday.
Results from both games will be reported in an upcoming Daily Freeman-Journal.
After trading scoreless frames, Dowling Catholic took the lead by plating two in the bottom of the fourth by way of a George Nahas double and a throwing error. Webster City attempted to counter in the top of the sixth, before stranding all three runners on base.
The Maroons added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame, before the Lynx fought back with three outs remaining in the game.
McKinney recorded the Lynx’s lone double, along with a single for the visiting Lynx. Junior Briar Klaver was 2-of-4 with two singles, while Keegan Hisler, CJ Hisler, junior Josh Stansfield, freshman Matthew Tesdahl and freshman Jaxon Griffith each contributed with hits.
Sophomore Brady Asklund fared well in relief, fanning two batters while allowing one run and two hits.
