SURVIVING THE ELEMENTS

Windy conditions don't deter medalist Doering

If you asked the Webster City boys’ golf team about their home triangular against Humboldt and St. Edmond, which took place on Tuesday at the Webster City Links Golf Course, there was another opponent on the fairways, rough and greens. The opponent was none other than the elemental force of wind.

The Lynx powered through, led by junior Braden Doering’s medalist round of 38. Doering took advantage of what Mother Nature threw at him, nailing birdies on the second, third and ninth holes and going par on holes one, six and eight.

Sophomore Luke Firsching also turned in a great day on the home links, landing in a four-way tie for second on the leaderboard with a round of 43.

Despite an exceptional outing by Doering and a strong showing by Firsching, the Lynx settled for a total of 181, finishing behind Humboldt’s 173. St. Edmond settled for third with 191.

At noon today at Briggs Wood Golf Course, the Lynx will roll out the welcome mat for Ballard, Clear Lake, Estherville Lincoln Central, Gilbert, Iowa Falls-Alden and Nevada for the Webster City Boys’ Golf Tournament.

On Saturday morning, the purple and gold will compete at the Kuemper Invitational at the Carroll Country Club. Teeing off at 8:30 a.m., the Lynx will go up against both Caroll and Kuemper Catholic, Atlantic, Denison-Schleswig, Humboldt, OABCIG, Panorama, Spencer and Spirit Lake.

Results from both meets will be posted in an upcoming edition of the Daily Freeman-Journal.

At the “Links,” Brandon Lahr and Trevyn Lyons finished with 50 strokes each, followed by Cael Nixon’s 53. Braylon Plain also competed at the meet.

On the junior varsity side, freshman Dawson Bertran and sophomore Cole Miller each carded a 46. Senior Ty McKinney added a 51, right alongside senior Jayce Neuroth’s 51. Freshman Joel Kasch had 54, followed by senior Connor Hansen’s 55.

Starting at $3.46/week.
