Sogard places 10th at state golf
AMES — In the final meet of the year, with friendly conditions to boot, the South Hamilton boys’ golf team took on some of the best players that Class 1A could offer.
In doing so, the Hawks fared quite nicely, with an opportunity to gain experience for several of its younger representatives.
At the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Class 1A State Golf Tournament, which was held this past Monday and Tuesday at the Ames Golf and Country Club.
There, sophomore Landon Sogard cracked the top 10 for South High, completing the course with 15 over par, with a total of 157 strokes. Finishing Monday with 82 strokes, Sogard was able to trim his total down to 75 strokes on Tuesday.
Junior Tyler Schachtner landed 24th overall, coming off of the course with a total of 167 strokes. Schachtner had 84 strokes on day one, and 83 strokes on day two.
Teammate Tjerdan Johnson was among the top 50, as well, with 181 total strokes. Johnson logged 93 strokes on Monday, before cutting down to 88 strokes on Tuesday.
Freshman Luke Martensen put up 187 strokes overall. After starting the tournament with 98 strokes, Martensen showed improvement on the final day of the state meet by carding 89 strokes.
Sophomore Connor Deppe was right behind Martensen on the leaderboard, recording 188 strokes. After carding an 88 after day one, Deppe turned in 100 strokes by the conclusion of the final day.
Freshman Michael Carlson had 200 strokes to round out the Hawks’ numbers. Carlson logged 102 strokes on the first day, before coming down to 98 strokes to finish his time at the state tournament.
It could be the start of a nice run of seasons for the Hawks and head coach Steve Butler, as the entire team is set to return next season.
