DECORAH — Success is made up of many factors. There’s hard work and dedication, for one. Other factors are physical and mental preparedness, and the luck of the draw.

The Webster City girls’ tennis team, as much as they prepared, had a tough time at the Class 1A-Region 6 Girls’ Tennis Tournament, which took place on Wednesday on the campus of Luther College.

Senior duo Joslin Gourley and Trinity Griffith were the lone Lynx representatives to advance in the tournament, venturing into the second round before bowing out.

After defeating Charles City’s Hannah Hoffman and Ryle DeBoest via 6-4, 6-0 decisions in the first round, the Webster City duo came up short against Dike-New Hartford’s Izzy Norton and Aida Tott in the tiebreaker.

Junior Kinzey Koestner drew the top seed in Aplington-Parkersburg’s Adria Neymeyer, bowing out after a pair of 6-1 results. Senior Izzy Feldhaus bowed out early with a pair of 6-1 losses against Dike-New Hartford’s Anna Frahm.

“It was a bit of a rough day for us,” said Mark Fisher, WCHS girls’ tennis coach. “I’ll take some responsibility, as we probably need to figure out a better way to be physically and mentally ready, especially with a long trip.”

“I thought our resume and talent stacked up, but didn’t back it up (at the tournament),” Fisher added.

Freshman Allie Severe and junior Addie Tesdahl competed in the pigtail round, but fell to Dike-New Hartford’s Misty Harreld and Madelyn Norton by way of a 6-0, 6-2 decisions.

On Saturday, the Lynx will return to action, this time taking part in the First Round of the Class 1A-Region 2 Tennis Tournament.

At 9 a.m. on Saturday morning at Byrnes Park Tennis Center in Waterloo, the Lynx will face off against Boone. Should they defeat the Toreadors, they will face either Columbus Catholic or South Hardin at 1 p.m.

Starting at $3.46/week.
