More challenging early competition for Webster City

In their past three games, it’s been peaks and valleys for the Webster City baseball team. You can’t blame them, though, they have played some pretty solid competition.

Facing Ballard last Thursday at the Nite Hawk Baseball Diamond in Slate, the Lynx fell to the Bombers, 13-3, in five innings.

Taking part in a round robin tournament on Saturday at the Bishop Garrigan Baseball Field in Algona, the Lynx bounced back with a 17-1 thrashing of Bishop Garrigan, before getting handed a 11-0 setback at the hands of top-ranked (Class 1A) Remsen St. Mary’s.

Going into the new week, the Lynx shifted to a 2-3 overall record.

Webster City went back to work this past Monday, as the purple and gold faced No. 3-rated (Class 2A) Kuemper Catholic at Merchants Park in Carroll. Today, Webster City hits the road once more, squaring off against No. 1-ranked (Class 4A) Dowling Catholic on the campus of Dowling Catholic in West Des Moines.

Results from the Lynx’s recent matchups against the Knights and Maroons will be reported in an upcoming edition of the Daily Freeman-Journal.

Against the Bombers, senior Connor Hanson led the purple and gold with a solo home run. Junior Josh Griep contributed with an RBI, while junior Keegan Hisler and freshman Jaxon Griffith each recorded one strikeout.

In the land of the Golden Bears, the Lynx returned to the .500 mark due to junior Trevyn Lyons’ six RBIs and freshman Carter Mickelson’s three RBIs. Senior Ty McKinney and junior Briar Klaver each had a double for the winning cause, while Griep and sophomore Brady Asklund each picked up hits against Bishop Garrigan.

On the mound, McKinney earned his first win of the season, allowing just two hits and fanning six Bishop Garrigan batters.

Unfortunately, the momentum didn’t carry over against the best team in Class 1A, as the Lynx were handed a no hitter from Remsen St. Mary’s hurler Isaiah Gerrietts. Gerrietts tossed five strikeouts in his five inning no-no, and allowed just two walks.

Lyons took the loss on the mound, despite striking out two Hawk batters. Asklund and freshman Gavin Griffith each tallied one strikeout against Remsen St. Mary’s.

Starting at $3.46/week.
