Lynx softball team drops four of five contests
Coming out of the gate, it’s been a little bit of a struggle for the Webster City softball team. Primed to be one of the contenders for the North Central Conference, the Lynx have had some stiff competition.
Starting with a nonconference matchup against Roland-Story last Thursday at Lynx Field in Webster City, the purple and gold battled hard before coming up short in a 2-1 setback. In their NCC debut, a late rally fell short, as the Lynx were dealt with a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Algona last Friday on the campus of Algona High School.
At the Bob Morgan Softball Classic, which took place this past Saturday at the Ogden Athletic Complex, the Lynx went 1-of-3 — falling to Des Moines 13-1, before blanking Carroll 5-0. After notching their first victory of the season, the Lynx couldn’t contain Boone in a 12-3 decision to end their day in Boone County.
Going into the second week of play, the Lynx moved to 1-5 overall and 0-1 within the NCC.
Webster City will take aim at jumping back into the win column tonight, taking on Storm Lake in a non-conference matchup set for 7:30 p.m. on the campus of Storm Lake High School. On Wednesday, the Lynx will square off against St. Edmond in an NCC tilt at Harlan and Hazel Rogers Sports Complex in Fort Dodge.
Results from both games will be reported in an upcoming edition of the Daily Freeman-Journal.
In their 2-1 loss against Roland-Story, the Lynx saw the debut of freshman pitcher Jakela Cherry, who fanned nine Norse batters in a complete game.
“(Cherry) had an awesome first varsity start,” said Brad VanDeer. “She was very poised and relaxed throughout the game. I thought we played better defensively (against Roland-Story), but had some mental lapses on the bases and at the plate that cost us a couple of runs.”
Junior Addy Tesdahl recorded a double and two stolen bases, while senior Trinity Griffith dished up an RBI for the home team.
Against Algona, junior Delainey Bargfrede struck out four batters in six innings, while senior Chloe Anderson came away with an RBI and a stolen base. Tesdahl and junior Bonnie Nohrenberg each contributed with a double and an RBI, and junior Ava Peterson had two base hits against the Bulldogs.
In their first game of the Bob Morgan Softball Classic against Des Moines Christian, the Lynx were spearheaded by Nohrenberg and senior Livia Kasch. Nohrenberg finished with one hit and one RBI, and Kasch picked up a base hit against the Lions.
Bargfrede found her footing against Carroll, striking out nine Tigers in six frames. Sophomore Breanna Bahrenfuss tabbed two hits, as Bargfrede, Tesdahl, Nohrenberg, Peterson and Griffith each tallied one RBI in the victory.
Nohrenberg led the way against Boone with two RBI, while Tesdahl contributed with one hit and a stolen base. Cherry struck out three Toreadors in the Lynx’s final game of the weekend.
