Lynx girls continue to improve on the track
IOWA FALLS — As the North Central Conference and Class 3A State Qualifying Meets draw ever so closer, the Webster City girls’ track team continued to show improvement each time they step foot onto the track, jump into the sand, clearing the bar or from within the circle.
Earlier this week, that improvement continued to show.
Participating in the Cadet Relays, which took place this past Monday at Cadet Field, the Lynx took fourth overall in the team standings with three first place individual finishes and two second place outings.
Senior Emma Peck has continued to make her presence known, winning the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:08.10, while helping her Sprint Medley teammates — senior McKenzie Mishler, junior Lynne Roberts and sophomore Chloe Savitski — to earn gold with a time of 2:03.63.
Freshman Jakaela Cherry also excelled, topping the field in the shot put with a toss of 31 feet, seven and a half inches. Cherry also netted a second place finish in the discus throw, slinging the disc for a distance of 86 feet, one inch.
Roberts, Mishler, junior Tateelina Vankham and teammate Bonnie Nohrenberg were runners-up in the Shuttle Hurdle Relay (1:18.27), while the team of freshman Alivia Burns, Peck, Roberts and Savitski took bronze in the 4×100-meter relay with a time of 55.47 seconds.
Vankham also took third in the long jump, recording a leap of 14 feet, eight and a half inches.
Savitski continued to impress, as well, finishing third in the 100-meter dash (13.19 seconds) and in the 200-meter dash (28.11 seconds).
“I thought the girls competed very well tonight, given that we were missing some key contributors, due to other obligations,” said Clint Howard, WCHS girls’ track coach. “Once again, we had several PRs and season’s best performances. Savitski had another solid night in the sprints and Peck had a great night, winning the open 400 and anchoring the sprint med to victory.”
“Cherry also had a big night, throwing personal bests in the shot and discus, finishing first and second respectively,” Howard added.
Next up for the Webster City girls is the North Central Conference Track and Field Championships, scheduled for 4 p.m. today at Dodger Stadium in Fort Dodge. St. Edmond is the host school for the meet.
There, the Lynx will see Iowa Falls-Alden and the Gaels once more, along with Algona, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, Clear Lake, Hampton-Dumont-CAL and Humboldt. Results from the conference meet will be reported in an upcoming edition of the Daily Freeman-Journal.
In the 100-meter hurdles, Mishler placed fourth (18.24 seconds) and Roberts settled for fifth (18.59 seconds), while sophomore Breanna Bahrenfuss tabbed fourth in the shot put with a distance of 26 feet, seven inches.
Freshman trio Cindy Gomez Lopez, Ellie Peterson, Julia Griep and sophomore Lydia VanDeer teamed up for the Distance Medley, placing fourth with a time of 5:45.50. Burns, Nohrenberg, Vankham and freshman Haley Ewing competed in the 4×200-meter relay, completing the race in sixth with a time of 2:14.31.
