Without a doubt, the eight-team North Central Conference has no shortage of talent.
Finishing no lower than fourth heading into the North Central Conference Championships, held last Thursday at the WCHS Track Complex in Webster City, the Webster City boys’ track and field team had their hands full.
Through it all, however, the Lynx brought their best by way of a plethora of season best performances, two All-NCC athletes, seven medalists and a school record.
Junior Jaxon Cherry had a phenomenal day, earning All-NCC status in the shot put and discus throw. Cherry won the shot put with a toss of 50 feet, eight inches, and took second in the discus with a distance of 158 feet, two inches.
The 4×200-meter relay team — made up of sophomore Jayden Weinzetl, junior Keegan Hisler, sophomore Luke Estlund and senior CJ Hisler — captured silver with a time of 1:32.30, and CJ Hisler achieved All-NCC status and a bronze medal in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.71 seconds.
The main evidence of the NCC meet being loaded was a record breaking performance by Weinzetl, Estlund, Keegan Hisler and CJ Hisler in the Sprint Medley. Together, they finished with a time of 1:37.34 — good enough to shatter a 2018 mark made by Jordan Tanner, Garrett Whitemore, Zane Williams and Lincoln LaSourd.
However, the quartet finished fourth in the event.
Webster City was fifth place finish in the team standings. Algona claimed an NCC title with 151 points, followed by Clear Lake’s 139 and Iowa Falls-Alden’s 117.
Following a busy day at the conference meet, WCHS boys’ track coach Chad Hisler provided his team with plenty of praise.
“We had some very good performances, including 13 season bests,” Hisler said. “I liked the way the kids competed.”
Webster City will compete in a Class 3A State Qualifying Meet, scheduled for 4 p.m. on Thursday at Cub Stadium in Nevada. The Lynx will see familiar opponents such as Algona, Clear Lake, Hampton-Dumont-CAL and Humboldt, as well as Gilbert, North Polk and host school Nevada.
Weinzetl also medaled in the 100-meter dash, netting fourth with a time of 11.24 seconds. Weinzetl, Keegan Hisler, CJ Hisler teamed up with freshman Aiden Hrnicek in the 4×100-meter relay, landing fourth with a time of 44.37 seconds.
Junior Brandon Lahr captured a medal-worthy performance by taking fourth in the shot put, tossing the silver sphere for a distance of 44 feet, three inches. Freshman Carter Mickelson picked up a medal completing the 1,600-meter run with a fifth place time of 4:52.
Mickelson joined Justin Callahan, junior Aiden Rahe and senior Brayden Henely in the 4×800-meter relay, recording a season best time of 8:55.37. Hrnicek also teamed up with junior Lincoln Tielke, senior Aiden Feltz and senior Gabe Rollins for the Shuttle Hurdle Relay, at a season-best 1:09.56 for fifth.
Rahe was sixth in the 800 with a time of 2:10.85. Freshman Jack Barner took sixth in the 3,200-meter run at 11:40.33.
