Eight in a row for No. 4 Webster City on the pitch

BELMOND — For more than a month’s time, the Webster City boys’ soccer team has only tasted victory. Taking on Wright County Soccer (Belmond-Klemme) on the road last Thursday at Faris Field, the taste of winning kept its sweetness.

The fourth-ranked (Class 2A) Lynx scored early and often, before running away with an 8-1 rout of WCS in a North Central Conference matchup. Their latest triumph also extended Webster City’s winning streak to eight consecutive fixtures.

Sophomore midfielder Eddy Fuentes compiled two goals and two assists for the winning cause, and now leads the team with 14 goals so far into the spring campaign. Teammate Eric Calles also scored two goals against Wright County.

Sophomore midfielder Conner Peck picked up one goal and two assists, while senior Everardo Hernandez and junior Eduardo Perez each came off the pitch with one goal and one assist.

Senior defender Isaac Haule had a goal by way of a penalty kick.

Thanks to the win, Webster City improved to 9-1 in conference play with a 9-1 overall record. Wright County fell to 4-11 overall and 2-9 in the NCC, following a 5-0 setback against fifth-ranked (Class 3A) Humboldt this past Friday in Humboldt.

Next up for the purple and gold side is a return to their home pitch, bringing in Hampton-Dumont-CAL for a crucial NCC tilt. In their previous meeting, which took place on April 13 at Bulldog Stadium in Hampton, the Lynx were lifted to a 2-1 victory via the boot of freshman Magdiel Magdaleno.

The Bulldogs (9-3, 6-2 NCC) are currently riding a three-match winning streak.

After getting a feel of their surroundings, the Lynx lit up the scoreboard in the 11th minute with Calles’ first goal of the match, followed by Hernandez’s first score two minutes later. Fuentes was credited with the first assist, and Peck supplied the second assist.

In the 21st minute, Perez connected with Fuentes for the latter’s first goal of the game, and Haule drew a favorable call within the box six minutes later.

Before intermission, Fuentes achieved his second assist by providing the touch for Peck’s lone goal of the match. At the 10-minute break, the Lynx built up a 5-0 lead.

Returning to the pitch, Hernandez assisted Perez with his first goal of the fixture in the 46th minute, while Fuentes connected for his second goal of the game with the help of Peck’s second assist at the 55th minute.

No more than 20 minutes later, Webster City saw Fuentes provide Calles with his second goal of the fixture. Fuentes was credited with his second assist.

Even though WCS scored two minutes later, in the 77th minute, the Lynx had sealed the road victory.
