Webster City girls defeat Bulldogs
With the North Central Conference tournament less than two weeks away, things are picking up for the Webster City girls’ tennis team.
The Lynx worked through two meets in two days at the Lynx Courts in Webster City, hosting Boone Monday before giving the nod to their seniors and welcoming in Hampton-Dumont-CAL for an NCC matchup on Tuesday.
Even though Webster City (4-4 overall, 4-1 in the league) came up short in a 6-3 result against the Toreadors, the Lynx bounced back with a 9-0 sweep over the Bulldogs. The purple and gold fared best in doubles in both matchups, while senior Izzy Feldhaus won both of her respective singles matches.
When the dust settled, WCHS head girls’ tennis coach Mark Fisher offered plenty of praise for his team.
“This group has been so fantastic to work with,” Fisher said. “It’s been so fun to watch their growth. Obviously, we still have more work to do and more ahead of us, but it’s wonderful to sit and reflect for a moment on what this group has done.
“To have this young and inexperienced team, led by two seniors who have been there and who have played the way they have, compete the way they have, and keep themselves right there in the thick of the NCC race is simply a testament to their character and the culture that they, and the ones before them, built here.”
Next up for the Lynx is a meet against Saydel, scheduled for 4:15 p.m. today. This weekend, the Lynx will take part in the Waverly-Shell Rock Girls Tennis Tournament.
Against Boone, senior Joslin Gourley came out empty handed in a 10-4 match against Morgan Kathman, while teammate Trinity Griffith fell in a 10-7 decision to Gracie Gustafson. Freshman Allie Severe was handed a 10-4 setback by Lucy Hansen, while sophomore Cyra Christensen and junior Kinzey Koestner fell in a pair of 10-5 results against Julianna Lutz and Shannon Jenkins, respectively.
Feldhaus was the lone Lynx to score a win, defeating Annika Byrd, 10-2.
Webster City fared better in doubles play, as Griffith and Gourley dominated by a 10-2 final.
The Lynx put the brooms to the Bulldogs on the next day, beginning with Gourley’s 10-4 triumph over Aspen Harlan and Griffith’s 10-1 victory over Shelby Rowe. Severe collected a 10-5 win against Heather Howery, before Christensen outlasted Jade Johnson in a 10-7 decision.
Koestner and Feldhaus were dominant in their matchups, as Koestner beat Chloe Creighton 10-0 and Feldhaus achieved a 10-0 win over Olivia Hamm.
Double play told the same story, with Griffith and Gourley dispatching Harlan and Howrey with a 10-1 win. Koestner and Feldhaus teamed up for a 10-3 victory, and Severe and Tesdahl rolled to a 10-1 triumph.
