Webster City boys host Lynx Relays
Until the Blue Oval returns to life for the 113th annual Drake Relays, which is scheduled for April 29 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, many teams and individuals from across the state are vying to be a part of that action.
One of those teams laced with Drake Relays-esque talent is the Webster City boys’ track and field team.
Welcoming in six other teams for the Lynx Relays, which took place on Tuesday at the WCHS Track in Webster City, the purple and gold saw the continued excellence of junior Jaxon Cherry and a potential Drake Relays qualifier with the 4×100-meter team made up of sophomore Jayden Weinzetl, junior Keegan Hisler, senior CJ Hisler and Cherry.
Cherry dominated the top spot in the shot put and discus throw, tossing the silver sphere for a distance of 50 feet, nine and a half inches and slinging the disc for a distance of 139 feet, nine inches.
In the 4×100-meter relay, the team of Weinzetl, Cherry, Keegan Hisler and CJ Hisler dished up a time of 43.85 seconds and a second place finish. According to Chad Hisler, WCHS head boys’ track coach, the runner-up finish may be good enough for an appearance at the Blue Oval.
Collectively, these performances and several others lifted the Lynx to a second place finish with 116 points, 14 points away from Iowa Falls-Alden’s 130 points and top spot in the team standings.
“It was a great runner-up finish for us on Senior Night,” said Chad Hisler, WCHS head boys’ track coach. “We had wins from (Cherry), (sophomore Jayden Weinzetl) and (freshman Carter Mickelson), and our 4×100-meter relay team had a likely qualifying time for the Drake Relays — with Weinzetl, Cherry, Keegan Hisler and CJ Hisler.”
Weinzetl continued to impress, topping the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.11 seconds.
Mickelson won the 1,600-meter run, crossing the finish line with a time of 5:01.65. Teammate Justin Callahan was solid, as well, complementing Mickelson with a third place finish at 5:12.23.
The team of senior Brayden Henely, Mickelson, senior Tristen Maxwell and freshman Justin Callahan took second in the 4×800-meter relay, notching a time of 9:01.76. The Lynx also acquired a quartet of third place finishes, starting with CJ Hisler’s time of 23.16 seconds in the 200-meter dash.
CJ teamed up with his brother, Keegan Hisler, in the Sprint Medley alongside freshman Aiden Hrnicek and Weinzetl, who collectively picked up a time of 1:40.26. Weinzetl, Keegan Hisler, sophomore Luke Estlund and Hrnicek also came away with bronze after posting a time of 1:37.61 in the 4×200-meter relay.
Junior Brandon Lahr came away with a third place outing in the shot put, hurling the sphere for a distance of 43 feet.
Up next for the Lynx is the PAC Boys Relays, set for 4 p.m. on Friday at the PAC Athletic Complex in Pocahontas.
Alongside Cherry in the discus throw was freshman Cole Nohrenberg, who attained a distance of 124 feet and a fourth place finish. Freshman Jack Barner took fifth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:56.03, while Henely landed sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.78.
The Shuttle Hurdle team — made up of senior Gabe Rollins, junior Lincoln Tielke, senior Aiden Feltz and Hrnicek — took sixth with a time of 1:13.06. Estlund, Henely, Hrnicek and junior Aiden Rahe teamed up for the 4×400-meter relay, finishing the race with a sixth place showing and a time of 3:49.79.
