South Hamilton girls win own invite title
JEWELL — Oh, how sweet home is.
The South Hamilton girls’ track and field team returned home, and threw out the welcome mat to opponents located near and far for the George Abell Hawkette Relays on Tuesday at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex.
The Hawks were heads and shoulders above the field, winning with 150 points overall. Roland-Story finished second with 127, followed by Northwood-Kensett’s 115 points. Des Moines Christian was fourth with 85 and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows had 81.
South Hamilton was paced by its relay teams, who topped the field in the Sprint Medley (1:56.16), 4×100-meter relay (52.26 seconds), 4×200-meter relay (1:55.52) and the 4×800-meter relay (11:07.38). The Hawks took second in the Distance Medley (5:00.81) and landed third in the 4×400-meter relay (4:34.29)
Individually, junior Kailyn Northrop won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:42.9, while teammate Kendra Hoversten earned gold in the shot put with a toss of 31 feet, five and a half inches.
Senior Kate Barkema took second in the 100-meter dash (13.11 seconds) and third in the 200-meter dash (27.65 seconds), while junior Tanna Thompson collected second in the 200-meter dash (27.3 seconds). Junior Ashlyn Erickson was a runner-up in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:03.28, while senior Paige Doolittle took bronze in the 1,500-meter run (5:38.52).
Complementing Hoversten in the field events was freshman Kaylen Trask in the shot put (fifth, 27 feet-8.25 inches) and freshman Dayton Ferrie in the discus (third, 83 feet).
Sophomore Sydnee Flaugh took fifth in the 100-meter dash (13.84 seconds), as teammate Caitlin Bare completed the 400-meter dash with a fifth place showing (1:13.05). Freshman Olivia Beaune also competed in the 1,500-meter run, taking fourth (5:40.74).
The high jump had three Hawks in the top six, led by junior Grace Neuberger (fourth at 4-8).
A freshman duo took top six placements in the long jump, as freshman Erin Greenfield turned in a distance of 13 feet, eight inches, while teammate Claire Hewitt landed sixth with a distance of 13-4.75.
While the 4×100-meter relay group will try their hand at the Drake Relays, the Hawks will take part in the West Marshall Co-Ed Track Meet, set for 4 p.m. today at State Center.
There, the Hawks will face West Marshall, Baxter, Colfax-Mingo, Colo-NESCO, South Tama, Lynnville-Sully and Meskwaki Settlement.
