Webster City girls trying to get back on track
Since winning their first two games of the 2023 season, the Webster City girls’ soccer team are working to get out of a rough patch.
The Lynx were dealt with two losses early this week, falling 4-2 against Garner-Hayfield-Ventura on Monday at Lynx Field before taking a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Columbus Catholic on Tuesday on the campus of Columbus Catholic High School in Waterloo.
The purple and gold didn’t go down with a fight, however, as the Lynx held a 2-1 halftime lead over the Cardinals, while pushing the Sailors to their limit.
“It was the best effort of the year (against Columbus Catholic),” said Chad Vogelbacher, WCHS girls’ soccer coach. “Everyone played hard and physical for all 80 minutes.”
Against the Cardinals, sophomore Sydney Oswald put in an effort of a goal and an assist, as junior Jillian Symens scored on a penalty kick. Junior goalkeeper Joleah Stuhr turned in a mind boggling 20 saves in front of home supporters.
In Tuesday’s match against the Sailors, Stuhr had nine saves. Freshman Janey Putney scored the Lynx’s lone goal, while Symens provided the assist.
From the pair of setbacks, the Lynx dropped down 2-8 overall with a 2-5 record within the NCC.
Webster City is back in action today, facing off against Humboldt for a conference matchup set for 5:30 p.m. at the Humboldt Soccer Field.
