Cherry shatters school record
SAYDEL — As the 2022-2023 academic year marches onward, Webster City junior Jaxon Cherry has continued to turn heads — whether it’s on the football field, wrestling mat or within the discus and shot put circles. In his past outing in the discus throw, Cherry etched his name into the school record books.
At the Saydel Invitational, held last Thursday at Saydel Stadium, the junior flung his disc for a distance of 164 feet and four and a half inches to win the competition — which broke the record held by Ryan Vandezande in 2009. Vandezande’s previous record was a distance of 162 feet, two inches.
Although they didn’t have a whole lot of representation at the highly competitive meet, the Lynx also saw sophomore Jayden Weinzetl take top billing in the 100-meter dash with a blazingly fast time of 11.98 seconds.
“We were a little shorthanded, but still managed to have some fantastic performances,” said Chad Hisler, WCHS boys’ track coach.
Carlisle won the meet with a total of 107.5 points, followed by Gilbert’s 89 points, Ballard’s 76 points, Madrid’s 61.5 points and a fifth place tie between Bondurant-Farrar and Greene County, who each collected 46 points.
The Lynx are back in action for the Lynx Relays, set for 5 p.m. today at the WCHS Track. There, Webster City will compete against Clear Lake, Eagle Grove, Humboldt, Iowa Falls-Alden, Pocahontas Area, South Hardin and St. Edmond.
It will also be an opportunity for the Lynx to honor its senior leadership.
Junior Brandon Lahr reeled in points in the shot put, which took fifth place with a distance of 53 feet, four inches.
The 4×800-meter relay, which was made up of senior Brayden Henely, freshman Carter Mickelson, senior Tristen Maxwell and freshman Justin Callahan, picked up a sixth place finish with a time of 9:10.37.
