Webster City wrestlers work through busy stretch
The Webster City wrestling team went 1-1 in a non-conference triangular here Thursday night with Ballard and Ankeny.
The Lynx then placed third at the Grinnell Tiger Duals on Saturday by posting a 3-2 record.
The Lynx posted a close 38-34 decision over Ballard, but were topped by Ankeny, 41-35.
Earning wins in the dual with the host Ballard were Angel Ramirez-Trujillo, Linden Phetxoumphone, Carson Doolittle, Brayden Henely, Jordan Vankham, Jaxon Cherry and Landon Griffin.
Henely and Cherry each earned falls, Phetxoumphone scored a technical fall and Ramirez-Trujillo, Doolittle and Griffin were awarded forfeits. Vankham posted a 6-0 decision in his match.
“We wrestled well,” Webster City head coach Chad Hisler said. “But we still have work to do. It’s early in the season and I know that the kids are going to continue working hard and getting themselves in the best possible shape to be ready to go come postseason.”
Phetxoumphone, competing at 113 pounds, needed just two minutes to record a 15-0 tech fall and finish his match. The freshman turned a takedown into 13 consecutive near-fall points.
In the dual with Ankeny, Phetxoumphone, Doolittle, Henely, Vankham, Brady Jessen, Austin Mason and Cherry were winners. Doolittle, Jessen, Mason and Cherry each had a fall.
At Grinnell, Bondurant-Farrar was crowned the overall champion, with Cedar Rapids Prairie second. The Lynx topped Grinnell, East Marshall and Mount Pleasant around losses to Bondurant-Farrar and Cedar Rapids Prairie.
Phetxoumphone, Cherry and Austin Mason each completed the day unbeaten with 5-0 records.
“We had seven duals in three days (including Thursday’s triangular),” WCHS head coach Chad Hisler said. “I thought we were very competitive but still have a lot to work on if we are to accomplish our goals.
“We are getting beat on bonus points and have to do a better job of fighting off our backs.”
Doolittle and Vankham were 4-1 while Ramirez-Trujillo, Henely, Tristan Mason, Luke Estlund, Brady Jessen, Dylan Burnette-Bingham, Skyler Scott and Griffin each won three matches.
Webster City will make its home debut on Thursday with a North Central Conference triangular featuring Clarion-Goldfield/Dows and Clear Lake beginning at 6 p.m.
The Lynx went to the Algona JV Tournament over the weekend as well, with Cael Alexander, Gabe Griffin, Carson Bertran and Cody Elliott all placing first, while Gavin Wynkoop and Eli Estlund were second.
