Stoakes cranks 2 dingers, Bargfrede belts 1; Lynx go 1-2 at MSM tourney

MARTENSDALE — The Webster City softball team took out a day’s worth of frustrations against Essex in its third and final game of the Martensdale St. Marys tournament on Saturday.

Following losses to AHSTW and eighth-ranked (Class 1A) Martensdale St. Marys, the Lynx unleashed an eight-run first inning and never relented in a 13-0, 3-inning whipping of Essex.

WCHS (11-8) finished with 10 hits in its win, including a first-inning two-run home run by Kelly Stoakes and a walk-off three-run dinger by Delainey Bargfrede in the third. Bargfrede also laced a triple and finished with a game-high three RBIs.

It was Stoakes’ team-leading fifth long ball of the season. Bargfrede and Ava Peterson have both hit three.

Breanna Bahrenfuss got a start and produced a pair of doubles and plated a run. Chloe Andersen roped a double and finished with two RBIs. Four others — Alayna Finucan, Adeline Tesdahl, Livia Kasch and Ellie Weinschenk — all singled. Tesdahl and Kasch both drove in two runs.

Bargfrede twirled a one-hitter inside the pitcher’s circle. She struck out six.

AHSTW 10, WCHS 3

AHSTW put up three runs in the first inning and three more in the third to take control of its game against WCHS in the tournament opener for both teams. The contest was called after six innings due to tournament time limit restrictions.

The Lynx managed to rattle off seven hits, but were hampered by five defensive errors. AHSTW scored four unearned runs off the miscues.

Stoakes’ first home run of the day — a two-run shot — came in the first inning.

Bonnie Nohrenberg joined Stoakes with 2 for 3 performances at the plate. Nohrenberg smacked a double, as did Peterson. Tesdahl and Trinity Griffith both singled.

MSM 5, WCHS 4

No. 8-ranked Martensdale St. Marys touched Bargfrede for just two hits, but one of them was a third-inning three-run home run by Campbell German that carried her team to its second win of the season over WCHS.

Tournament time limit restrictions also halted this contest after six innings.

The Lynx finished with five hits, including a second-inning RBI double off the bat of Kasch. Stoakes drove in a run with a base knock in the fifth. Finucan, Griffith and Bargfrede all added one hit, and Tesdahl drove in one run.

WCHS will return to the diamond this evening against North Central Conference rival Clear Lake, in Clear Lake, at 7:30 p.m.
