PCM scores 10 runs late to pull away from Hawks

PRAIRIE CITY — The South Hamilton baseball team appeared to be on its way to a first Heart of Iowa Conference victory here Friday night.

And if the game had lasted only five innings, that would have happened. Unfortunately, the sixth and seventh innings didn’t go the Hawks’ way.

Prairie City-Monroe ripped off 10 runs in the final two frames to rally from a 3-1 deficit and beat South Hamilton handily, 11-5. The Mustangs (5-4, 4-2 HOIC) connected for eighth of their 12 hits in the sixth and seventh, and also took advantage of two South Hamilton errors.

“They hit the ball well, we just need to make plays when they are presented to us,” South Hamilton head coach Cole Swenson said. “We are still looking to hit our peak. We have a couple weeks left to hit it and we’re going to work until we get there.”

South Hamilton (2-10, 0-6 HOIC) scored one run in the first inning and then opened up a lead courtesy of a two-run third before PCM came storming back.

Tanner Blue went 2 for 3 at the plate and Tjerdan Johnson was 2 for 4 in a losing effort. Blue also scored a pair of run.

Elijah Balderas added a single.

South Hamilton will return to its home diamond today for a varsity doubleheader against league rival Perry. Game 1 will get started at 5:30 p.m.
