Lynx extend NCC softball streak to 19

Webster City pushed its North Central Conference softball win streak to 19 games by routing Algona at home on Friday, 11-1 in six innings.

The victory kept the Lynx (15-10 overall, 10-0 in the league) a half-game ahead of St. Edmond and in the NCC driver’s seat. The two teams square off this Wednesday at Rogers Park in Fort Dodge.

Patient at the plate, Webster City walked nine times against the Bulldogs (8-12, 4-7). When the Lynx were swinging, they were just as effective, with Delainey Bargfrede recording a pair of hits and two RBI to lead the way.

Bargfrede was again the catalyst in the pitcher’s circle as well, striking out eight in a complete-game one-hitter. The only run the sophomore allowed was unearned, as she lowered her ERA to 1.89 and upped her strikeout total to 183.

“The girls did a great job of coming out focused and ready to play,” WCHS head coach Brad VanDeer said. “We had a couple days of practice this week to clean up some areas, and it showed.

“The team is doing a great job of focusing on right now and what is right in front of them. We have a big week of games coming up, but that’s nothing new to them. They know the only way to navigate the schedule is to focus on today. Playing our best Monday is our next priority.”

The defending champion Lynx head to Clarion-Goldfield/Dows on Monday before their showdown with the 12th-ranked (Class 1A) Gaels. Webster City then closes out conference play with home contests against Humboldt on Friday and Iowa Falls-Alden on Saturday.

Trinity Griffith added two hits, two runs and an RBI in the rout of Algona. The Lynx stole 10 bases, with Alayna Finucan swiping a pair. Finucan walked three times.

Ava Peterson also drove in two for Webster City.

The Lynx dropped two low-scoring games to ranked opponents on Saturday at the Roland Story Norsemen Classic, suffering a 2-1 setback to seventh-rated (3A) Saydel before being blanked by host R-S, 3-0.

Liv Kasch had the lone RBI against the Eagles. Bargfrede allowed two earned runs and struck out seven.

Finucan, Griffth, Stoakes and Peterson had the hits versus the No. 14 (3A) Norsemen. Bargfrede (15-5) again gave up two earned runs and whiffed seven.
