SPEED TENNIS SUITS LYNX JUST FINE IN SWEEP OF ’DOGS
WCHS stays perfect in NCC?duals
WEBSTER CITY — Regular tennis or speed tennis, the Webster City girls’ team can do either quite effectively.
With rain in the forecast for the late afternoon and early evening hours on Monday, the Lynx did all they could to dispose of North Central Conference rival Hampton-Dumont/CAL before the meet was washed out.
The start time was moved up. The matches were shortened. And the WCHS players made it their missions to not let their opponents sniff success.
It all worked too.
WCHS owned a 54-7 edge in games and rolled to a 9-0 sweep of the Bulldogs to move to the doorstep of the regular season conference championship. The Lynx need to just beat Clear Lake next week to secure the title.
“Getting this (match) in before the rain was a win all by itself,” WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. “I thought for sure we’d either never get started or we’d have to pull (the players) off and stop it before singles was ever over, but we were able to work through all of the varsity singles and doubles matches, as well as getting six (junior varsity) doubles matches in.”
It helped that each WCHS player ended her match in near record time. Kayley Wibholm and Trinity Griffith were both 6-0 winners, while the remaining four Lynx — Joslin Gourley, Mackenzie Burney, Makaylee Draeger and Jordyn Sullivan — won by matching 6-1 counts.
“All of the singles players played very smart,” Fisher said. “It can be easy in a match like this to get a little sloppy or over aggressive, but I thought all of the girls played within themselves.
The most games HDC (0-4, 0-3 NCC) was able to take was two in the No. 3 doubles match.
In its three conference meets, WCHS (6-1, 3-0) was won 26 of 27 matches.
