WEBSTER CITY — Peer pressure is generally frowned upon, but every now and then — as in the case of Addy Beaulieu — a little good can come from it.

Beaulieu, a Webster City sophomore, hadn’t planned to play soccer this spring. It was a sport she gave up in the fourth grade. But enough cajoling from several of her friends got her to the first practice, and then into the starting lineup, and then into the role of difference maker Monday evening at Lynx Field.

Still new to the goalie position, Beaulieu stepped into the spotlight and performed with two crucial saves in penalty kicks to help WCHS prevail over North Central Conference rival Hampton-Dumont/CAL, 3-2.

The match was knotted at 2 after regulation and remained that way after two 10-minute overtime periods. And that’s when the pressure was draped across the shoulders of Beaulieu, who took over as the keeper in early April. Two of HDC’s five kicks were off the mark and Beaulieu was in position to snag two more, including the boot off the right foot of Teaghan Bird that sealed the win.

“It was pretty awesome to know all of the girls were excited, especially since it was Senior Night,” Beaulieu, who made three saves prior to PKs, said. “I was a little nervous, but I didn’t want to show it, and (my teammates) have always had my back.”

After teammates mobbed Beaulieu on the field, WCHS head coach Chad Vogelbacher stepped in to congratulate his keeper.

“Boy, did she handle herself really well because that is not easy being on display like that,” Vogelbacher said.

WCHS (4-10, 4-6 NCC) prevailed in PKs, 2-1, as Shelby Queen and Jillian Symens blasted shots into the net. Symens missed the majority of the match after a collision midway through the first half and that limited the Lynx offense, but she was able to take the pitch when the match was on the line.

HDC (1-12, 1-10 NCC) controlled the first half while WCHS flailed in the steamy conditions, but the final 60 minute of play were all Lynx. WCHS out-shot the Bulldogs 18-1 during the second half and overtime periods, and owned a 25-7 advantage overall.

“Considering we’ve played almost every game in the cold, wind and rain, it was definitely a challenge playing in the heat for the first time,” Vogelbacher said. “It took the whole 40 minutes (in the first half) to get adjusted to it, but in the second half and overtime we played really well.”

HDC scored twice in the first half to build a 2-1 lead. Zoe Erdman snuck a shot in the right side in the 13th minute and Irlanda Tangarife got a shot past Beaulieu on a breakaway in the 19th.

Kayla Calles got WCHS on the scoreboard in the 16th with a bomb from near midfield. HDC cleared the ball out of the box, but Calles raced past the center stripe and rifled a high arcing shot that just snuck in the upper 90 on the right.

Olivia Gallentine evened the match less than five minutes into the second half with a shot from straight on. WCHS had repeated chances to move in front later in the half and throughout both overtime periods, but Bulldogs’ keeper Gina Schmit made a number of nice saves to keep it knotted.

The Lynx seven seniors — Queen, Calles, Jacie Crutcher, Anna Gomez, Allison Oswald, Kelly Alvayero and Adalie Peterson — were honored before the start of the match.
