WEBSTER CITY — Coveted spots in the state track and field meet will be up for grabs today in Gilbert during a Class 3A State Qualifying Meet, and Webster City is geared up to do what it can to grab onto as many as it can get.

Field events will get started at 4 p.m. The top two finishers in each of the 19 events will automatically qualify. There will be eight additional wild card entrants from across the state added in each event on Friday.

WCHS will be joined in the field by Algona, Gilbert, Hampton-Dumont/CAL, Humboldt, Iowa Falls-Alden, Nevada and North Polk.

Steamy and windy conditions will add layers of difficulty to the meet. Temperatures are expected to top out in the low 90s and winds are predicted to gust close to 30 mph.

The Lynx boys’ team enters the meet with three first or second seeds and a total of 10 individuals or relays that are seeded among the top five.

Senior thrower JJ Moore is the No. 1 seed in both the shot put and discus. The fourth-place finisher in the shot put at the Drake Relays and a returning state medalist in the event, Moore is currently No. 2 in 3A with a best throw of 57 feet, 53⁄4 inches. He’s consistently been above 54 feet throughout the season, a measurement that should easily advance him to state if he can reach it today.

Moore is sixth overall in 3A in the discus (158-0). Teammate Jaxon Cherry, seeded third in the state qualifier field, will look to advance to state in the discus for the second straight year as well.

The Lynx own the second-fastest 4×200 time (1:32.86) in the state qualifier. Cherry, Keegan Hisler, Charlie Stansfield and CJ Hisler will run together in that event, as well as the 4×100 where they’re seeded third.

CJ Hisler is also seeded third in the 200, while Cherry is the No. 4 seed in the 200.

For the WCHS girls’ team, Adeline Tesdahl will look to earn a second straight trip to state in the 400 hurdles and she enters today as the No. 1 seed in the event (1:12.10). There are three other girls expected to compete that have run within one second of her time.

The Lynx own the No. 3 seed in both the shuttle hurdle and sprint medley relays. Tesdahl will be joined by Cloe Savitski, Dasha Sankey and Emma Peck on the medley. Tesdahl, McKenzie Mishler, Brynna Croy and Bonnie Nohrenberg will run the hurdles together.
