TOTAL TEAM EFFORT TITLE
HAWKS EDGE RIVAL R-S TO TAKE HOME INVITE

JEWELL — Dan Brodie doesn’t remember the last time the South Hamilton girls’ track and field team finished in front of Heart of Iowa Conference rival Roland-Story at a meet. He does know that he’d have to dig deep into the program’s annals to find out.
“I don’t even want to think about how far we’d have to go back for that,” Brodie, the Hawks’ head coach, said with a chuckle.
That made Tuesday’s George Abell Hawkette Relays all the sweeter for Brodie and his pupils. Not only did South Hamilton edge out the Norsemen, but it stood above the field to win its home meet and claim its second consecutive meet championship.
And it was a total team effort.
South Hamilton dominated the individual sprints — it outscored Roland-Story 46-6 in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes — and more than held its own in the other 16 events to score 146 points in front of a partisan crowd on an uncharacteristically pleasant evening this spring. The Norsemen were second with 136, followed by Northwood-Kensett (103).

“They’re solid and we’re solid, so it was fun,” Brodie said, referring to the head-to-head battle with Roland-Story. “We knew it was going to be a two-horse race, us versus (Roland-Story) in every single event. The girls took that to heart and really enjoyed the success. It was a complete team effort.”
The standout individual performances only added to the celebratory evening.
It started early when senior Mackenzy Grady broke her own school record in the discus not once, but twice. She went over 125 feet on one of her initial three attempts to clinch the gold medal and then uncorked the program’s best-ever throw of 129 feet, 8 inches on her final attempt. It’s the second-best throw in Class 2A this season and puts her eighth overall in the state entering the Drake Relays.
“Kenzy is a confident girl and she gets fired up with competition,” Brodie said. “She is in a place where she wants to compete with the best and this weekend (at Drake) is going to give her an opportunity to see where she’s at.”
Grady added a silver medal in the shot put (35-9) and Grace Neuberger matched that in the high jump (4-10) — parts of a 30-point performance in the field events for the Hawks.

Kelbe Krumm, another senior, took over for South Hamilton in the sprints. She won both the 100 (13.70 second) and 200 (25.57), and was responsible for 241⁄2 team points, the most of any individual in the field.
“Kelbe is the catalyst,” Brodie said. “She’s been consistent for us for the last couple of years now and she’s a gamer. She shows up and you know you’re going to get a good result from her.
“Kelbe and I have a love-hate relationship. I love watching her run fast and she hates when I make her run. Well, she better get used to it because she’s going to be running a lot more.”
Teammates Tanna Thompson (14.03) and Makena Galetich (28.59) earned bronze and silver medals in the 100 and 200, respectively. Ashlyn Erickson added to the sprinting haul with a victory in the 400 (1:03.30).
South Hamilton won seven events in all and hoarded 16 total medals.
The Hawks stayed within two points of Roland-Story in the relays and won the 4×200 (1:50.21), 4×800 (10:35.42) and distance medley (4:54.55). They were second in the 4×100 (52.79) and sprint medley (1:56.29).
Galetich, Krumm, Thompson and Barkema were on the winning 4×200. Kailyn Northrop, Anna Lammers and the Beaune twins, Mercedes and Madison, teamed up in the 4×800.
