THE UNICORN

Cherry not the typical track and field athlete

ALLEMAN — Jaxon Cherry isn’t normal and that’s not a knock on the Webster City sophomore. It’s quite the opposite, actually.

Typically, track and field throwers are not sprinters and sprinters are not throwers. And even on those rare occasions when athletes do attempt that unusual double, one of the specialties is dominant over the other.

That’s not true with Cherry though. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound three-sport star — he’s also an all-state football player and state medalist wrestler — is pretty danged good at both.

Cherry won a pair of silver medals at Tuesday’s North Polk Comet Relays, first in the discus behind teammate JJ Moore and then later in the 100-meter dash. He added a fifth-place finish in the shot put and helped the Lynx 4×100 relay place fourth in a field of talented teams.

“You don’t see that happen very often,” WCHS head coach Chad Hisler said with a chuckle, referring to Cherry’s unique silver double. “He obviously had a really good night.”

Cherry, a 2021 state qualifier in the discus, had a best heave of 140 feet, which was well behind Moore, who turned in his best toss of the season at 155-21⁄4. In the 100, Cherry was nipped at the tape by North Polk’s Sal Capaldo. Cherry’s finishing time was 11.31 seconds.

Moore and Cherry were responsible for four of the Lynx six medals — the Hisler brothers, Keegan and CJ, won the other two — at the eight-team invite. WCHS finished with 73 points and was fifth, just three points behind fourth-place Roland-Story (76) and within shouting distance of third-place West Des Moines Dowling (86).

North Polk (174) ran away with the team crown, as the Comets piled up 18 medals and seven event victories. Johnston (134) was second.

“We did some good things in a tough meet that was top heavy,” Chad Hisler said. “The good teams were really, really good.”

Moore went over 150 feet to essentially wrap up the gold medal on his first of four attempts in the discus, but he surpassed it later in the competition. Later in the shot put, he was the only competitor — there were 16 entrants — to surpass 50 feet, something he did repeatedly. His best heave of 56-23⁄4 came on his final attempt.

Moore, a 2021 Class 3A state medalist in the shot put, will compete in both throws at the Drake Relays. He’ll begin this afternoon in the discus at 4 p.m. where he’s seeded 23rd, followed by the shot put at 9:30 a.m. on Friday. He’s the No. 4 seed in that event.

“That was a really good night for JJ,” Chad Hisler said. “That’s his best throw (in the shot put) since the indoor meets I think, and if he can throw 56 or 57 feet (at Drake), he’s got a good chance of getting a medal.”

Keegan Hisler, also a sophomore, turned in the best series of high jumps in his budding career. He was clean over 5-10, which set a new personal record, and then he cleared 6-0 on his second attempt to break his PR again. He was second behind only returning 2A state runner-up Jack Noble of North Polk, who took the bar past 6-7.

“That was great for Keegan,” Chad Hisler said.

CJ Hisler was fifth in the 100 (11.68) and then later set his personal-best time in the 200 (23.25) to earn the bronze medal.

While Moore is in Des Moines today, WCHS will head to Boone for a coed meet. The 4×100 quartet of Charlie Stansfield, Cherry and the Hisler brothers will make the trek south to the blue oval to compete in the Drake Relays on Saturday.
