Carlson, Young guide Hawks to 7th at WM Invite

STATE CENTER — Rebekah Carlson and Grace Young placed in the top 25 and they led South Hamilton to a seventh-place finish in the 10-team West Marshall Invite on Tuesday at Lincoln Valley Golf Course.

The cold and windy conditions made the 18-hole round difficult and frustrating at times, but to finally compete trumped everything else.

“It was finally nice to get out and play even though the weather was not ideal,” South Hamilton head coach Kathi Fisher said after her squad produced a 446. “I was very happy how the girls persevered through the adverse conditions.”

Carlson, a sophomore, relied on her short game en route to a 101 and 16th-place finish on the leaderboard. Young was five strokes back with a 106 to place 24th, and Miranda Deppe was four more shots back with a 110 and 31st-place result.

Grundy Center (369), Roland-Story (378) and West Marshall (389) were the only teams in the field to break 400. Grundy Center’s Avery Dirks (87) was the individual champion.
