PANORA — Four scores in the 80s and a medalist round for Beau Klaver enabled the Webster City boys’ golf team to win the eight-team Hal Rossow Invite at the always treacherous Lake Panorama National on Saturday.

Windy conditions — at times the howling conditions made the round nearly impossible — pushed scores high and the Lynx were the most consistent group in the field. They fired a 346 to win the team title by 20 strokes over runner-up Carroll Kuemper (366). Montezuma (371) was third, followed by Panorama (382) and Earlham (406).

“We had four scores that broke 90 for counters and nobody else did that, so I was really happy with how we played,” WCHS head coach Eric Dawson said. “It was really hard out there and when the winds started howling, I really didn’t know what to expect. But we held it together.”

Klaver, a senior, picked up the individual title — the first of his career — with an 84. Kuemper’s Maverick Schwabe also shot an 84, but the top spot on the leaderboard went to Klaver on a card back.

“Beau’s a grinder and he’s worked on every bit of his game,” Dawson said. “He played a lot last summer and it’s really paying off. His putting has been a huge improvement.”

Drew Schwering and Braden Doering both carded rounds of 87 for the Lynx, and Garrett Arnold was just one shot behind with an 88. Devon Stoakes (92) and Colton Wood (98) also took part.

“I was really happy for Braden Doering,” Dawson said. “It’s hard for a young kid like that to endure the wind for that long. I expect the seniors to get through it, but he held it together and had a birdie late in his round.”

Lynx win NCC triangular

A sub-par round on its home course didn’t stop WCHS from remaining unbeaten in North Central Conference duals on Friday.

Despite a 178 — more than 15 strokes higher than either of the first two outings — on the front nine at Briggs Woods Golf Course, the Lynx managed to get by Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (182) and Iowa Falls-Alden (202).

They couldn’t get by their own junior varsity teammates though.

In actuality, the WCHS JV won the meet with a 175, and Cael Nixon’s 40 tied for the low round of the day with meet medalist Carter Arends of Iowa Falls-Alden. Colton Wood (42), Jayce Abens (46) and Jamin Stuhr (47) were all counters for the Lynx JV.

“We were pretty disappointed with the varsity (score), but with that being said, we’ve got a good problem with a lot of good players,” Dawson said. “They can beat each other on any given day, and Cael is right there with all of them. He had a really good round.”

Doering paced the WCHS varsity with a 42, three shots better than Stoakes and Arnold. Schwering added a 46, Klaver a 47.
