STILL LEARNING
Hawks take it on chin against HOIC?rival Trojans, split 2 other duals

JEWELL — It was hard knocks time for the South Hamilton wrestling team in its opening dual of last night’s quadrangular on home soil.
West Marshall delivered one haymaker after another, and even pulled a surprising upset, en route to a 78-6 Heart of Iowa Conference victory. But South Hamilton answered the challenge by winning 10 of 13 contested matches in duals against Collins-Maxwell and Des Moines North-Hoover to give head coach Dan Brodie plenty to work with moving forward.
The Hawks (2-4, 1-2 HOIC) knocked off Collins-Maxwell, 42-24, but couldn’t overcome six forfeits in a 48-36 loss to North-Hoover despite the fact they won five of the seven contested weights.
“(West Marshall) jumped us,” Brodie said. “They came in and punched us in the nose and we didn’t respond as well as I was hoping. They have a lot of experienced kids and we’re still learning. It was frustrating, but I think these are all teachable moments for us in the month of December.
“It was nice to see our resilience (in the last two duals) though. They’re not taking losses hard and that’s good to see.”

Keyton Remsburg (126 pounds) was the lone South Hamilton grappler to get through the night unscathed, as he took the hammer to three foes. None of his bouts made it past the first period, as he racked up pins in 1:48, 1:13 and 51 seconds. Brodie says the returning state qualifier has started to turn that corner as he continues to get comfortable up two weight classes from a season ago.
“He’s just getting more confident,” Brodie said of Remsburg. “He’s starting to figure things out and he approaches everything with a workmanlike attitude, and he just does the little things right.”
Ninth-ranked (Class 1A) 182-pounder Brent Greenfield suffered his first loss of the season against West Marshall’s Austin Pfantz — and it was an upset — but he rebounded to win his bout against sixth-ranked (1A) and returning state place winner Brody Sampson of Collins-Maxwell in a rematch of a first-round tussle at the 2021 state tournament.
Greenfield led Pfantz when he got out of position and went to his back and it’s a moment that Brodie says his senior leader will learn from.
“Pfantz is a quality kid and he’s looking to catch you if you slip up, and that’s exactly what happened,” Brodie said. “Pfantz did to him what Brent has done to so many kids, but it was a good learning moment. He knows if he slips up against quality kids, they can beat him.”

Greenfield, who pinned Sampson in Des Moines in February, led a wild back-and-forth battle 14-11 in the third period when he caught Sampson in a headlock and tossed him to his back. Sampson landed out of bounds, but Brodie says he appeared to be dazed when he got to his feet and he was unable to continue. Greenfield earned the win by injury default.
“It was a fun back and forth match and I think maybe we got a little ahead of ourselves and were thinking about that match (prior to wrestling Pfantz),” Brodie said. “From the first whistle to when the ref stopped it, Brent was all over him.”
All eight wrestlers in the South Hamilton lineup picked up at least one win on the night, and six had at least one pin.
Braden Young (132) and Adley Peters (220) earned two victories, one by fall, and Graham Peters (195) decked two opponents. Holden Klein (106) and Alan Gandara (138) both had a pin as well.
“The beauty of what we’re doing right now is we’re winning the matches we should win,” Brodie said.
