Lynx strength of schedule shows up in AP poll

WEBSTER CITY — The latest Associated Press prep football poll just goes to show the difficulty of Webster City’s early-season schedule.

Sitting at 1-2, the Lynx have dropped non-district games to Humboldt (3-0) and Waverly-Shell Rock (3-0), both of which are ranked No. 4 in their respective classes. Humboldt, a 35-7 winner over WCHS in Week 1, sits behind Harlan, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley and Solon in Class 3A. Waverly-Shell Rock, which handled the Lynx 31-14 last Friday, resides behind Indianola, North Scott and Cedar Rapids Xavier in Class 4A.

And the schedule is only going to get tougher for WCHS as the season progresses. Following a road trip to Mason City (1-2) this Friday, the Lynx will open up 4A District 1 play in Week 5 against No. 7-ranked Fort Dodge (3-0).

The No. 1 teams in each of the seven classes this week include: Southeast Polk (5A), Indianola (4A), Harlan (3A), OA-BCIG (2A), Van Meter (1A), West Hancock (A) and CAM (8-man).

Noticeably absent from the AP Top 10 for the first time in a long, long … long time is West Des Moines Dowling, which got shoved out in 5A following a loss to Ankeny on Friday. Dowling has lost two of its first three games.
