Kienzle, Grove take the lead for Hawks at Norsemen Invite

STORY CITY — Five runners inside a 70-second gap was the key to another successful performance for the South Hamilton girls’ cross country team yesterday afternoon at River Bend Golf Course.

From leader Annika Kienzle to the final scorer Mercedes Beaune, all five placed in the top 33 to give the Hawks 104 points and third place at the Norsemen Invite. Host Roland-Story dominated the meet with 29 points, while Bondurant-Farrar was second with 78.

“We ran well on tired and sore legs,” South Hamilton head coach Emily Bochmann said. “Pack running continues to be a strong point of this year’s team.”

Kienzle took the lead with a time of 22:48, good enough for 12th place. Val Wagner set a personal record for the second straight meet en route to a 17th place result in 22:58. The Beaune sisters, Madison (23:15) and Mercedes (23:58), were 21st and 33rd, respectively, while Anna Lammers (23:32) came across between the twins in 26th.

Landon Grove added a PR of his own in the boys’ race, as his clocking of 18:44 earned him 15th place. He was the leader of a South Hamilton crew that was seventh overall with 171 points. Ogden (64), Nevada (76) and Carroll Kuemper (82) held down the top three spots.

Eli Potter (19:22) came across in 24th for the Hawks. Bobby Tapper (20:15) had a PR and finished 38th, and Logan Halfwassen (20:37) was 41st. Jagger Ferrie (21:18) completed the scoring in 53rd.

South Hamilton will compete in the Nevada Invite on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
