Hawks pay for defensive lapses against Bombers

HUXLEY — A tough fourth inning defensively overshadowed what was an otherwise quality outing by the South Hamilton softball team here Tuesday night.

Three errors, all coming with two outs, allowed Ballard to push six runs across the plate and the Bombers put it on auto pilot the rest of the way to earn a 9-0 victory over the Hawks.

“The score doesn’t reflect it, but this was one of our better games of the season,” South Hamilton head coach Josh Gorman said. “(Pitcher) Anna (Lammers) and our defense did a nice job of shutting a really good Ballard offense down the first three innings.”

Ballard (9-5) turned it over to freshman pitcher Brooklyn Baumgardner to finish it off. She struck out eight in the complete-game effort, and seven of her whiffs came during the first time through the South Hamilton (4-5) order.

Gorman liked what he saw from his offense the second time through though.

“We adjusted well,” he said. “Even though we only had three hits, that second time through the order we were driving the ball harder as a team than we have most of the season. Ballard was just able to make the plays and stop us from having any big innings.”

Zoey Duns, Mackenzy Grady and Brenna Barquist all notched base hits for the Hawks.

Lammers was touched for 10 hits, but just one earned run in five innings of work. She struck out one.

Makena Galetich took over in the sixth and surrendered three hits and two earned runs.
