DES MOINES — And the wins just keep on coming for the Webster City girls’ tennis team.

On the road and playing a reversed schedule — doubles prior to singles — the Lynx still managed to handle their business and claim their third straight dual meet here Tuesday evening.

WCHS (8-2) held a slim 3-2 edge coming out of doubles, but then owned singles play with five wins in six bouts to dispose of Saydel, 8-3.

“It’s always a little weird when you play doubles first, but I thought we handled it well,” WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. “Our top four players, especially, really showed up and played well in both singles and doubles. We were aggressive, we were tactically smart, and we played with a little more urgency than we’ve shown the last meet or two. It was really good to see them dominate their matches.”

As she has done all season, No. 1 player Kayley Wibholm set the tone. She teamed up with Joslin Gourley to win the top doubles match, 8-3, and then hammered the Eagles’ Grace Peck, 8-1. Gourley had no trouble against Taylor Kouski en route to an 8-3 win.

Mackenzie Burney and Makaylee Draeger continued their perfect doubles season with an 8-0 sweep, and they combined to win their Nos. 2 and 4 singles matches by a combined score of 16-3.

Burney and Draeger are now 10-0, and they own an 88-32 edge in games won over their opponents.

“Having them is like having two No. 1 doubles teams,” Fisher said. “I feel really confident every night that they can go out and dominate their match-up.”

Wibholm improved to 8-2 on the singles court. Burney, Gourley and Draeger are all 7-3.

McKinzey Koestner added an 8-5 win over Saydel’s Maddy Miller. The Lynx tandem of Anna Atchison and Emma Stroner joined the lineup and handled their match, 8-2.

WCHS will be in Iowa Falls to take on Iowa Falls-Alden this afternoon. On Saturday, Fisher will take his club to Waterloo for Class 1A team regionals. The Lynx will open up against St. Edmond with a likely date against always formidable Waterloo Columbus if they advance.
