PREP BRIEFS: TRACK, TENNIS AND GOLF

HAWK GIRLS WIN FIVE EVENTS AT HOIC: Kate Barkema was a four-time champion at the Heart of Iowa Conference meet last night, as she led the South Hamilton girls’ track and field team to a fourth-place finish.

Barkema won the 100-meter dash (13.69 seconds), just a step ahead of teammate and runner-up Kelbe Krumm (13.94), and then ran on the winning 4×100 (51.79), 4×200 (1:51.27) and sprint medley (1:56.94) relays.

Ashlyn Erickson won the league’s 400 title (1:02.92), and also anchored two of the relay wins. Tanna Thompson was a member of the three gold medal relays.

BUSCH OWNS THROWS AT HOIC: Austin Busch dominated the throwing events and the South Hamilton boys’ track and field team placed third at last night’s Heart of Iowa Conference meet.

Busch tossed the discus 162 feet, 9 inches to win easily. It wasn’t much closer in the shot put, as he won with a heave of 55-6.

On the track, Brock Galetich and Freddie Lewis were both individual champions. Galetich claimed the 200 (23.94 seconds), while Lewis was best in the 800 (2:04.82).

Galetich and Lewis were both on the winning distance medley relay (3:48.25) along with Ty Skartvedt and Kyler Hodnefield. Skartvedt also won as part of the 4×800 relay (8:46.71).

LYNX GIRLS TENNIS ENDS SKID: Coming off back-to-back losses to Ballard and Boone, the Webster City girls’ tennis team restored some confidence with a 6-3 victory over St. Edmond yesterday evening at the Lynx Courts in Webster City.

Tied at 3 after the six singles matches, WCHS (6-2) swept the three doubles bouts to prevail.

Kayley Wibholm (8-1), Joslin Gourley (8-2) and Makaylee Draeger (8-5) were singles winners for the Lynx.

The duos of Wibholm and Gourley (8-3), Draeger and Mackenzie Burney (8-4), and McKinzey Koestner and Jordyn Sullivan (8-6) were all victorious.

Draeger and Burney remained unbeaten in doubles on the season.

WCHS BOYS TENNIS ROUTS GAELS: The Webster City boys’ tennis team knocked off St. Edmond for the second time this season yesterday evening. The Lynx entered Fort Dodge and prevailed, 7-2.

Heath Patterson, Seth Nelson and Brody Henderson were all singles winners for WCHS (4-5). St. Edmond (1-7) won a pair of singles matches.

Patterson rallied from a set deficit to top Lucas Kornder in the tiebreaker, 10-5. Nelson and Henderson were both straight sets winners.

SH GIRLS GOLF 3RD AT HOIC: The South Hamilton girls’ golf team fired a 410 to place third at Wednesday’s Heart of Iowa Conference tournament in State Center.

Roland-Story (369) rolled to the team title, while Nevada (405) was second.

The Hawks’ Miranda Deppe finished fifth overall with a 95, and Grace Young cracked the top 10 in eighth with a 99.

“Our team goal was to come in third,” South Hamilton head coach Kathi Fisher said. “(The tournament) was definitely a confidence builder.”

On Tuesday, South Hamilton shot a 214 to lose a dual meet to Ballad (206) by eight shots. Deppe was the team leader with a 48.
