No. 2 doubles Burney and Draeger stay perfect, Lynx drop 2nd straight dual

WEBSTER CITY — The Webster City girls’ tennis team ran into a second straight brick wall Tuesday at the Lynx Courts, but head coach Mark Fisher remained optimistic.

“Kind of the same story as Friday (following a loss to Ballard). We played some of our best tennis all around, even better than Friday for the most part, but just ran into a very good and very well-coached team,” Fisher said following his team’s 8-1 loss to Boone. “They are very good at what they want to try and do, and they will make you earn everything.”

WCHS (5-2) picked up its lone win from the doubles team of Mackenzie Burney and Makaylee Draeger, a duo that is still unbeaten on the season. They dismissed the Toreadors’ Sophie Dierking and Bria Schwind in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-4.

“Mackenzie and Makaylee just keep winning,” Fisher said. “They really dominated the first set … they came out a little shaky and flat in the second set, but got themselves righted to take that set too. It was great to see them identify their faults in the second set as they continue to look for areas to improve.”

Draeger took a set off Schwind in singles, but Schwind was able to prevail in the tiebreaker, 10-6.

WCHS will host St. Edmond today at 4:30 p.m.
