Ervin and Doolittle bring home gold, Hawks 4th at coed meet

Lineups changes work against SH in final tuneup prior to conference meet

ALLEMAN — Dan Brodie says this one is on him. The South Hamilton girls’ track and field coach tinkered with his lineup Monday evening and he thinks it cost the Hawks plenty of team points.

“We didn’t run the lineup we normally run and sometimes it can screw up the timing of the whole meet,” he said. “Girls weren’t warming up when they usually do … so we’ll go back to the lineup that I think we need to be running against high competition on Thursday.”

It wasn’t like South Hamilton tanked at the North Polk Coed Comet Invitational. The Hawks won a pair of events, 10 total medals and scored 101 points to finish fourth behind North Polk (140), Roland-Story (133) and Nevada (112).

Traditionally known for middle distance and distance prowess, Abby Ervin showed off her speed and won the 200-meter dash in 28.41 seconds. Brodie recently inserted her into the Hawks’ 4×200 relay and he says Monday’s performance in the open 200 showed he made the correct choice.

“She’s versatile,” Brodie said. “Abby’s a girl that we’ve looked to plug into that 4×200 so Ashlyn (Erickson) can run the (400). This was an opportunity to get a solid 200 time in and it was good for her.”

Paige Doolittle also claimed gold in the 3,000 (13:24.97).

Emma Lewis (long jump, 15 feet, 5 inches) and Kate Barkema (100, 13.24) were individual silver medalists, and Kelbe Krumm (100, 13.40) and Caleigh Hewitt (high jump, 4-10) won bronze.

The Hawks’ strong sprint relays were denied top honors though. The 4×100 (52.97) and 4×400 (4:24.05) were both second, while the 4×200 (1:52.48) and 4×800 (11:15.63) were third.

“We ran well, but maybe not our best,” Brodie said. “But I would rather it be (Monday night) and learn from it, and then come back Thursday and be stronger for it.”

South Hamilton will compete in the Heart of Iowa Conference meet at PCM High School on Thursday. Brodie confirmed the Hawks will be without talented thrower Mackenzy Grady, who broke the school record in the discus last month. Grady is still nursing a hamstring injury and Brodie’s holding out hope she’ll be able to return for next week’s Class 2A state qualifier.

“I can’t say anything with 100 percent certainty, but our ultimate goal is to be as healthy as we can be next week,” he said.
