DYNAMIC DUO’ED

WEBSTER CITY — One would have been tough enough to deal with. But two? Forget it. Game over.

And it took them just 25 seconds to strike.

No. 13-ranked (Class 1A) Dike-New Hartford blitzed Webster City with its formidable one-two punch of junior midfielder Sophia Hoffman and sophomore forward Camille Landphair over and over again Tuesday evening at Lynx Field. The two combined for eight goals and six assists in the Wolverines’ 10-0 victory.

The match ended in the 69th minute on, fittingly enough, Landphair’s fourth goal and Hoffman’s third assist.

“They have very good players all the way through, and then two really dominant players,” WCHS interim head coach Chad Vogelbacher said of the Wolverines. “When we’ve got to go 80 minutes against a well-disciplined, strong team with strong players all the way through, we wear down a little bit and have some mental lapses.”

It didn’t help that WCHS (4-7) was coming off a hard-fought 4-2 road win over Des Moines Hoover just 24 hours earlier. Put tired legs on the field against the high-octane Wolverines and, well, you get Tuesday’s result.

“We were still pumped up and a little tired (from Monday night),” Vogelbacher said. “So we’re not going to dwell on it. We’re going to try to learn from it because that’s where we strive to be.”

Landphair’s size and speed up top, combined with Hoffman’s deft skill, aggression and pitch vision proved nearly impossible to stop from the opening whistle. Hoffman sent a through ball from midfield toward the goal just in the opening minute, and Landphair tracked it down to score on a one-on-one against WCHS goalkeeper Rori Snethen.

The two hooked up on a similar connection in the third minute to make it 2-0. Hoffman and Landphair combined for four goals and five assists in the opening half, as D-NH (9-2) took a 6-0 advantage into the break.

The Wolverines’ stars rank among the 1A leaders in goals, assists and total points. Landphair is No. 3 in goals with 29, No. 3 in assists with 17 and No. 2 in points with 75. Hoffman is No. 2 in assists (23) and No. 4 in points (59) to go along with 18 goals, which ranks ninth.

And it’s not like WCHS is the only team to be boat raced by the Wolverines this season. They’ve outscored their foes 70-11 with four 10-0 wins and six shutout victories.

“They caught us off guard because we weren’t sure what to expect with their speed,” Vogelbacher said. “And, clearly, we weren’t ready for their speed.”

Becca Jorgensen added a goal and two assists for D-NH, while Paula Gonzalez also found the back of the net.

Were it not for Snethen though, the match could have been over at the half. The sophomore keeper collected 10 saves in the first half, including a pair of kick saves, one on a slide. She had 13 in all, but too many times she was stranded on an island against Landphair or Hoffman.

“She’s improving every time that we put her out there,” Vogelbacher said of Snethen. “She’s really good in the field too and it’s too bad we lost our regular goalkeeper (Maddie Pulis) to injury in the first game of the season. We’ve been playing catch-up ever since.”

WCHS tightened up its back line during the initial 15 minutes of the second half and frustrated the Wolverines. Adela Arriaga was tasked with slowing down Landphair, and it paid off as the Wolverines’ star drew a yellow card in the 51st minute.

But, eventually, D-NH hit its stride again. Landphair scored twice and Hoffman rifled off her fourth goal in a five-minute stretch to finish off the Lynx.

The Wolverines ripped off 41 total shots and peppered the goal with 23. WCHS, meanwhile, managed just three total shots and only one on goal. Shelby Queen had the best chance to get the Lynx on the scoreboard in the second half, but her long shot from straight on just missed curling inside the right post.

WCHS will head back out on the road Friday evening to take on Iowa Falls-Alden, in Iowa Falls, at 5:30 p.m.
