WCHS medals 17 times, claims Pokey Relays title

POCAHONTAS — Six victories and 17 total top-three performances carried the Webster City boys’ track and field team to its second meet victory of the season here Friday night.

Humboldt pulling back on the reins helped too.

The Lynx spread the wealth — 62 points in individual running events, 46 in the relays and 40 in the field events — to compile a total of 148 points, four better than Humboldt in the Class A team standings.

Freshman off a runner-up performance in the 3,200-meter run at Thursday’s Drake Relays, Wildcats’ star Quinton Orr didn’t run his usual program and that aided the Lynx victory. Humboldt also was forced out of the 4×400 relay due to an injury to Caden Matson and WCHS won the final event to vault to the top of the standings.

“We know Humboldt wasn’t at their best, but stuff happens and our kids did their part,” WCHS head coach Chad Hisler said. “Up and down the lineup, people stepped up and it was really good to get another win.”

Depth was key.

WCHS double-medaled three times, double-placed five times and finished in the top three in six of the eight relays.

JJ Moore won both throws, while CJ Hisler and Jose Ramirez were both gold medalists on the track. Moore tossed the shot 54 feet, 51⁄2 inches and the discus 148-8. CJ Hisler won the 100 in 11.69 seconds, ahead of third-place finisher and teammate Riley LaSourd (11.86), and Ramirez took the 1,600 (4:47.88), two spots in front of bronze medalist Jacob Willson (5;04.71).

“We had a lot of (personal bests),” Chad Hisler said. “Neven (Stark) finished fifth in the shot and all four of his throws were PRs. Jose ran a great mile too.”

CJ Hisler was also second in the 200 (23.69), as was his younger brother Keegan in the high jump (5-6) and Kaiyu Levongkhom in the 110 high hurdles (15.68).

WCHS won two relays — the shuttle hurdle (1:06.87) and 4×400 (3:43.10). Trey Mathis hit the track for the first time since the indoor season and was part of the hurdle relay alongside Levongkhom, Carson Koeppen and Treyton Sinclair. Jack Van Diest, Skyler Scott, Charlie Stansfield and Brendyn Carlsen clinched the team title in the 4×400.

The Lynx won three other individual bronze medals — CJ Hisler in the long jump (18-81⁄4), Skyler Scott in the 200 (24.16) and Levongkhom in the 400 hurdles (1:05.86).

WCHS will be at North Polk on Tuesday.
