TOGETHER AT LAST

ON SAME STAGE, LYNX BOYS AND GIRLS 2ND AT BOONE

BOONE — It all came down to the final race and yet, in reality, it was over before the gun went off.

One team had one of the premier 400-meter runners on the anchor of its 4×400 relay. And that was ballgame.

Tegan Bock anchored Boone to gold in the final relay to preserve his team’s small lead over Webster City at last night’s Boone Coed Classic. The Toreadors kept the trophy at home with 147 points, four ahead of WCHS, which finished with 143 points. It was a two-team battle all evening, as Woodward-Granger was a distance third with 49.

It was a runner-up kind of night for the Lynx, as the girls’ squad was also second behind Boone. The Toreadors compiled 188 points to 144 for the Lynx. Woodward-Granger (107) was again third.

Despite the close calls, both WCHS head coaches were satisfied with the efforts of their athletes on a warm and breezy evening.

“It came down to that last race, but I knew they had one of the best 400 runners in the state anchoring it,” WCHS boys’ coach Chad Hisler said. “We had our best time of the year (in the 4×400), but they just ran better. We had season’s bests and (personal records) up and down the lineup and that was awesome to see.”

“I was happy with the way the girls competed,” WCHS girls’ coach Clint Howard said. “I didn’t think we competed our best up at Humboldt on Monday in terms of controlling the things we could control mentally. We had a good talk about that on Tuesday and they responded.”

The WCHS boys’ team won nine events and 22 medals in all.

JJ Moore (shot put), Brayden Henely (400), Jose Ramirez (1,600) and Kaiyu Levongkhom (110 high hurdles) were all individual winners, and the Lynx captured gold in five relays — the 4×100, 4×200, shuttle hurdle, sprint medley and distance medley.

Hisler singled out the performances of Henely and Carson Koeppen, who was a key contributor in the hurdle events. Henely put together a personal-best time of 56.04 seconds in the 400, while Koeppen ran the third leg on the shuttle hurdle relay and also grabbed the bronze in the 100 hurdles.

“Brayden and Carson both had great nights for us,” Hisler said.

Keegan Hisler (high jump), CJ Hisler (100), Jack Van Diest (200), Jacob Willson (3,200) and Levongkhom (400 hurdles) all secured silver medals. Willson was also third in the 3,200; other bronze medals went to Moore (discus), Antwoine Phabmixay (long jump), Riley LaSourd (100) and Charlie Stansfield (200).

Kaelyn Butz grabbed a pair of gold medals for the Lynx girls’ team. She anchored the 4×800 to an easy win alongside Emma Peck, Shelby Queen and Dasha Sankey, and then later returned to the track to win the open 800.

Megan Brandt gave WCHS a third first-place finish, as she bested the discus field.

Adeline Tesdahl was a two-time individual runner-up in the long jump and 100.

Lexi Nichols (high jump), Bonnie Nohrenberg (long jump), Delaney Kopriva (shot put) and Peck (400) were all third-place finishers.

The Lynx were second in both the 4×200 and 4×400, and third in the 4×100, sprint medley and shuttle hurdle relays.
