HUMBOLDT — Medal-winning performances didn’t grow on trees for the Webster City girls’ track and field team at the Wildcat Relays on Monday.

Talented competition in each event meant the Lynx were forced to pick up small slivers of points where they could en route to a team total of 78 and a sixth-place finish in the eight-team field. They claimed just five medals in all and won just one event.

“It was a tough field of teams,” WCHS head coach Clint Howard said. “Up and down the events, it was just tough. But I thought the girls battled well.”

Freshman Adeline Tesdahl continued to be the team’s most versatile weapon, as she accounted for a team-high 18 points and the lone gold medal. She won the 400-meter low hurdles in 1:15.20, and also ran the opening leg on the third-place shuttle hurdle relay (1:17.61) and the anchor leg of the bronze medal 4×200 (1:56.63). Tesdahl barely missed a fourth medal in the long jump where she was fourth (15 feet, 5 inches).

Lynne Roberts, McKenzie Mishler and Brynna Croy completed the shuttle hurdle group. Kennedy Moore, Marah Range and Dasha Sankey ran the opening three legs of the 4×200.

Howard continued to be impressed with his 4×800 quartet of Sankey, Emma Peck, Shelby Queen and Kaelyn Butz. The group lowered its season’s best time for the third consecutive meet, this time by close to 15 seconds, and finished second in 11:00.37.

“That group is so fun to watch and (distance) coach (Tony) Bussan obviously does a good job with them,” Howard said.

Lexi Nichols won an individual bronze medal in the high jump (4-8).

WCHS will be back in action on Thursday at the Boone Classic, a coed meet that will get underway at 4:30 p.m.
