GILBERT — Speed, speed and more speed — that’s what South Hamilton girls’ track coach Dan Brodie has at his disposal this season. And his four primary sprinters put on a show at Tuesday’s Lindsey Ellingson Coed.

Freshmen Ashlyn Erickson and Tanna Thompson teamed up with sophomore Kate Barkema and junior Kelbe Krumm to win the 4×100 (52.88 seconds), 4×200 (1:50.78) and sprint medley (1:57.54) relays in dominant fashion.

The Hawks piled up 49 points in the relays and 46 more in the field events — a large chunk of their 110 total, which was fourth in a field of primarily larger schools. Roland-Story (160), Ballard (134) and Gilbert (124) occupied the top three slots.

South Hamilton’s strong showing in the sprint relays vaulted it up the Class 2A leaderboard. The 4×200 currently sits No. 2 in the class, while the sprint medley is No. 5 and the 4×100 No. 7.

The quartet of Abby Ervin, Anna Lammers, Kailyn Northrop and Valerie Wagner supplied 14 team points with a silver showing in the 4×800 (11:03.65) and a third-place effort in the 4×400 (4:40.55).

Mackenzy Grady powered the Hawks’ throwers with a victory in the discus (106 feet, 4 inches), and she was followed by teammate Emmaly Fields (96-7) in second. Fields also placed third in the shot put (33-71⁄2), and Caleigh Hewitt was the high jump runner-up (4-8).

Hawk boys also 4th

Austin Busch, Tanner Blue and Brock Galetich all won two individual medals to help push the South Hamilton boys’ track team into the fourth-place spot with 110 points at Tuesday’s Lindsey Ellingson Coed.

The Hawks produced 1081⁄2 points, trailing Pella (1861⁄2) and co-runners-up Gilbert and Roland-Story (1271⁄2).

Busch continued his torrid start to the season with a victory in the shot put (53-03⁄4) and second-place toss in the discus (148-3).

Blue led throughout the majority of the 400 low hurdles, was passed briefly down the stretch and then had a strong finish to claim the top spot in 1:00.80. He was third in the 110 high hurdles (16.82) earlier in the evening.

Galetich dominated the first heat of the 200 (23.91) and it was good enough to finish second overall. He was also third in the 100 (12.01).

Freddie Lewis was the 800 runner-up (2:09.12), and he ran the opening leg of the Hawks’ winning 4×800 (8:57.38). Ty Skartvedt, Eli Potter and Seth Godfredsen joined him on the 2-mile relay.
