Lynx stay perfect with rout of Bulldogs

HAMPTON — The Webster City girls’ tennis team remained perfect on the season with its second 9-0 rout over Hampton-Dumont/CAL on Monday.

But just winning isn’t enough for the Lynx anymore. They want to play their best tennis each time they step on the court, but head coach Mark Fisher felt his players were a bit lethargic in their second encounter with the Bulldogs.

“The results were obviously what you want, but I didn’t think we played our best tennis,” he said. “We had been a little flat this past week of practice and it showed, especially early in singles. The nice thing now is we hit a part of our schedule where there will be plenty of matches, which is what we need at this stage.”

The concerns certainly didn’t show up in the scores. WCHS (4-0) won all six of the singles matches by at least four games, and the closest of the three doubles bouts was 8-2.

Kayley Wibholm, Makaylee Draeger and McKinzey Koestner all improved to 4-0 in singles, while Mackenzie Burney and Joslin Gourley improved to 3-1. Jordyn Sullivan is 3-0.

Wibholm dominated the Bulldogs’ Faith Grover, 8-2, in the No. 1 match. Koestner was the most dominant Lynx player in singles with an 8-1 romp.

Wibholm and Gourley upped their doubles record to 4-0, as did the tandem of Burney and Draeger. Anna Atchison and Keyla Martinez got the chance to contribute to the win, as they rolled to an 8-0 doubles win.

“It was great to see Anna and Keyla step in at (No. 3) doubles and finish the sweep of the meet,” Fisher said. “They both came out strong from the start and played very aggressive.”

WCHS will face difficult tests on back-to-back days later this week. The Lynx will host Iowa Falls-Alden on Thursday before heading to Huxley to take on Ballard on Friday.
