Lynx golden in 6 events, 2nd at Umstead

EAGLE GROVE — The Webster City boys’ track and field team scored in a variety of ways and piled up 15 top-three finishes, including six gold medal performances, at the Umstead Relays here Tuesday night.

When the dust settled, the Lynx had compiled 131 points to finish comfortably in second place in Class A behind North Central Conference heavyweight Humboldt (158). Forest City (109) was a distant third.

“I think we have a lot of potential and it was fun to finally compete,” WCHS head coach Chad Hisler said. “We’ve got a lot of fast kids.”

JJ Moore doubled up on the gold in the shot put and discus, and Jaxon Cherry gave the Lynx a 1-2 finish in the discus to highlight the field events. Moore tossed the shot put 52 feet, 71⁄2 inches, and the discus 141-5.

Kaiyu Levongkhom added a third-place finish in the long jump (18-3), and then thrived on the track with a runner-up finish in the 110 high hurdles (15.96 seconds). He ran on the Lynx winning 4×100 relay (45.35), as well as on the second-place shuttle hurdle relay (1:07.62).

“Kaiyu had a great night,” Hisler said.

CJ Hisler, a sophomore, anchored the Lynx sprint contingent with the 200-meter title (23.68) and a silver medal run in the 100 (11.81). He anchored the 4×100.

“CJ and JJ were definitely highlights,” Chad Hisler said.

Jose Ramirez won himself a pair of gold medals as well, first on the anchor of the distance medley relay (3:57.24) and then later in the 1,600 (4:58.15).

WCHS secured second-place points in the 4×400 (3:46.09), and third-place points in three other relays — the 4×200 (1:38.49), 4×800 (9:29.84) and sprint medley (1:41.88).

The Lynx will lock horns with Humboldt again, as well as a full field of teams, on Friday on the Wildcats’ home turf.
