WEBSTER CITY — A one-shot difference from its first dual meet of the season was an encouraging sign for the Webster City girls’ golf team Tuesday afternoon at The Links.

There was just one problem — the opponent this time out was a bit more daunting.

North Central Conference heavyweight Clear Lake littered the top of the leaderboard to comfortably hand WCHS a 40-stroke loss, 176-216. The Lynx opened their season on the same nine-hole terrain earlier this month with a 215 and blitzed Manson-Northwest Webster by 38 shots.

Just as they’ve done throughout the early portion of the season, Rebecca DeLong and Meghan DeLong toured the course with very few hiccups and they led the Lions (3-1) to the win.

Rebecca DeLong, a sophomore, fired a 2-over par 38 to win the medalist honor by six shots over Meghan DeLong (44), a freshman. Rebecca DeLong has taken the medalist honor outright or shared it in all three of Clear Lake’s outings, while Meghan DeLong has been the runner-up twice.

The chilly and at times

windy conditions gave WCHS (1-1) some problems and pars were hard to come by. Katie Casady had the team’s only two at the 491-yard, par-5 third hole and 144-yard, par-3 sixth hole. Her 47, which also included three bogeys, shared third on the leaderboard with Clear Lake’s Hannah Blaha.

Alley Odland found trouble on the three par-5s and played them at 8-over, but held her round together enough to give WCHS its second-best score with a 55. Ella Dinsdale and Jayde Bertran were close behind with rounds of 57.

WCHS will face Iowa Falls-Alden on Friday in Iowa Falls. The meet will start at 4:30 p.m.
