GOWRIE — Missing several key pieces to the puzzle, the Webster City girls’ track and field team relied on the veterans it had and a slew of eager youngsters to vault into the top three at the Richard Ryan Relays Monday evening.

Senior Kaelyn Butz won the 800-meter run, while Adeline Tesdahl and Emma Peck both won a pair of individual medals, as WCHS put up 103 points to finish in the third position in Class A behind meet host Southeast Valley (152) and Carroll (136).

“For the first (outdoor) meet of the year, I thought we competed pretty well throughout the lineup,” WCHS head coach Clint Howard said. “We had a lot of unknowns going into the meet and we have some key contributors in the sprints out with injuries, but a few of the older girls did a great job of leading. With the exception of one or two events, we met or exceeded expectations going into the meet.”

Butz toured the track twice in 2:52.53 to give the Lynx their only first-place finish. She also ran the third leg of the team’s runner-up distance medley relay (5:03.06) and on the anchor of the 4×400 (4:40.67), which was also second.

Tesdahl earned her own silver medal in the 200 (29.22 seconds) and secured bronze in the long jump (14 feet, 91⁄2 inches). Peck was third in the 400 (1:07.10), right in front of Tesdahl who was fourth (1:07.61), and in the 1,500 (6:03.63).

WCHS picked up three more medals in the field events from Hannah Brandt in the discus (93-3, second), Lexi Nichols in the high jump (4-8, second) and Delaney Kopriva in the shot put (29-9, third).

Tesdahl was also a member of the Lynx runner-up shuttle hurdle relay (1:19.92) alongside Lynne Roberts, Tateelina Vangkham and Brynna Croy.

Shelby Queen joined Butz on both the distance medley and 4×400 relays.

WCHS will head to Eagle Grove for a meet this evening.
