WCHS girls struggle in season-ending loss to Spencer

SPENCER — Sometimes there are nights that everyone would like to forget, and last night just happened to be one of them for the Webster City girls’ basketball team.

That it occurred in the postseason only adds salt to the wound.

Outmatched at both ends of the floor by a taller, quicker and more athletic Spencer squad, the Lynx tumbled out of Class 4A Region 8 with a 64-10 quarterfinal-round loss to the Tigers.

Spencer (15-7) advanced to Saturday’s regional semifinal round where ninth-ranked Harlan (15-5) awaits. WCHS (3-16) enters the offseason with a little more than nine months before it will return.

Spencer won the battle of tempo right off the tip, as the Tigers got on the board less than five seconds into the contest. They bolted out to a 17-2 lead after one quarter and then held WCHS scoreless in the second to take a 35-2 advantage into the intermission.

WCHS struggled to break Spencer’s full-court press, which was responsible for the majority of the Lynx 17 first-half turnovers. They finished the contest with 22.

When WCHS did make it into the front-court, nothing would fall. The Lynx missed all 20 of their first-half field goal attempts.

Livia Kasch connected for the team’s first bucket on a short jumper from the right block at the 7:34 mark of the third quarter.

Leah Kasch netted seven of the Lynx points. The senior also collected five rebounds.

Eleven different players jumped into the scoring column for Spencer. Allison Piercy opened the third quarter with seven straight points and she finished with a game-high 14. Haley Berends poured in 10 of her 12 points in the first half.
